My Western Trapper earning patina and beauty marks in a multitude of small ways. Here a bit of R&R in the spotlight

Last evening I was finally able to start a fire with a fire steel, dryer lint, and some dry wood shavings. I had been trying to get the wood to light for weeks, with no luck. Getting the lint to light was no big deal. But getting the wood to catch was proving to be a bit more challenging. Never having been a boy scout does have its disadvantages...

I used to feather sticks, which worked quite well. I use a lighter now, which also works rather successfully. :)

Yeah, I'll be buying a brass Zippo. Seems appropriate with a traditional knife. But I still want to learn how to use a fire steel well and efficiently. Though I haven't been able to convince my wife of the value, I've been looking at putting together a bug-out bag. I'm not the survivalist kind of guy, but of all the hobbies I could have, this one could actually be useful someday.

Just ordered a cheap AAA single mode flashlight as well as a Sunwayman M11R. I guess a bug-out bag has to start somewhere.

This Boker was my first stockman and companion, at work, fishing, camping, and kitchen, for many many years, it's still my favorite stockman.

Great pic Andy!!

Put some new Bics in your BOB. I have a brass Zippo and use it now and then to light my cigar but if not used for a while, the lighter fluid will evaporate and it won't light when you need it. Mine won't. It's a better daily use thing IMO. Makes sure you pack a can of lighter fluid in your stuff if you go with the Zippo.

I've been making wildfire/emergency/weather/camping bags for my friends and family for several years.

Here's what I'm toting today (overcast weather and it's getting so I need a light inside those days).

Thanks to Paul H for that nice bead on my light lanyard!!!

Gotta love the way a SAK looks after years of use. I can hardly wait for mine to start looking this well-used. Going to take a few years.
