What "Traditional Knife" are ya totin' today?

366612ea249390b5c67883413ddc0794.jpg

38's today.

A versatile pair with great coloring! So many of our members seemed to get in on the American Whittler version of the 38 with the heraldic shield. It looks fantastic!

That is a beauty Glenn! I was actually working with Brent Cramer to produce a custom just like that with white holly at around 3 1/2 oal. I had to back out due to life, but if the funds are ever there that pattern is at the top of my list. What is the OAL on that beauty good sir?

3 1/8" closed.

Tsar - Thank you and that Russell is a dandy!

Likewise on charlows :) Great looking sawcut on your Russell Barlow,
Here was the carry still in the pocket today.
Some very nice worry stone wormgroove bone in a modded S&M

Thanks, fellas! You could build a water slide in those grooves, Tim. :p

Hey, I know that trick!

Does that mean we have to fight like Highlanders now?

An owl shield? Hmmmmmmm.

...
Say, I seem to have missed this Russell along the way. I have one like it!
With its Boker cousin:
Before and after a cuppa softened the harsher greeniness near the bolster:

Family reunion time!!! :D :D

I’m glad you posted that jigged Boker. I have a 494 with very similar scales but I expressed some skepticism as to its legitimacy in the “Traditional Barlows” thread. IIRC the jigging pattern matches yours which means it’s more than likely original to the knife. Photos will be forthcoming in that thread, but your pic makes me happy. :)

I kinda dig the stark contrast between the undyed and dyed bone at the Russell’s bolster. The tea bath sure does antique it up nicely, though!

Simply breathtaking stag on that teardrop. If the pile side is half as pretty that is a gem of a knife!

I changed things up a bit this morning and grabbed some stainless. This was taken during today's hike. Maybe 20 minutes after this picture was taken I got caught in a hail/ rain storm and had 3 miles left on the trail. :grumpy:

Sounds like you lucked out on your choice of steels today. Just don’t let that beautiful bocote get too wet. ;)

Hope you make it OK :)
Yes, I need to make another trip to Sheffield, maybe next week :)
...
Weird English weather continues  Woke up to more snow today, after a beautiful Spring-like day yesterday. Who knows what the afternoon will bring  I should be prepared hopefully ;)

I think I’m going to make it, though I’ve ended up with a rather busy weekend at a time that I was hoping for a quiet one.

Could you give us some details on that good-looking little BSA swell-center? I have a guess based on the Delrin’s color pattern and the section of the master blade that we can see, but I’m not particularly confident in my detective skills. :o

Decided to get this one out. It's lightweight, I like the bone and the moderate Hawkbill is actually surprisingly useful not just for gardening tasks. I'd like to see a Traditional with a small Pruner as secondary. For wire-stripping, fishing tasks, box opening and hard plastic shells, a small Pruner excels.

I can see why you like the bone on that hawk. That jigging is fetching and you don’t see it too often. It must grip like a dream, too.

Here are my companions for today.
And a better shot of the Wharncliffe with its carry rig:
^^ I really love this one, but don't carry it as often as I should. It's a true Wharncliffe, not only in terms of its blade profile, but also its pattern, as originally per Lord Wharncliffe's specs. :D

If the Case serial etch wasn’t on the bolster you could easily mistake that for an antique knife. That is an absolute beauty! Is it a Bose collab, or some sort of SFO?

That is a really neat slip cover too. I may need to take a few cues from it when I start slapping a few leather ones together for myself.

Nice pic Will . And agreed regarding the pruner, I have a SAK Harvester with a small pruner and it goes through that awful plastic packaging amazingly well.
For me today, Happy Friday ALL!

I’ve come to know this combination as “Tomstyle”. :D This particular pair is probably my favorite. I can never take my eyes off that Queen, and your Barkie’s handle material is far and away the most attractive I’ve seen on their knives.

This one today...

Fantastic whittler, Glenn. I think you’ve made Primble jealous with your Primble. :p

Thanks for the info on your canoe. Are you sure it's single-spring?? All of my RR canoes are 2-springs, and I'd love to get my hands on a single-spring version if RR makes them! "Pretty decent pair" is an understatement for your combo! That sawcut Russell is a definite treat!!
...
I've had a swayback jack and a GEC 85 on kitchen duty this week:
And, as usual, every day I carry the Sodbuster Jr (thanks, Bob), the Vic Electrician (thanks, Greg), the Delrin Peanut (thanks, Cory), and the Vic Minichamp:

Your belt or suspenders must be working overtime keeping that load of steel in place! ;)

I’ll have to double-check the canoe when I get home. It’s possible that it’s a two-spring knife and the F&F is just so good on this particular example that I mistook it as a single-spring when looking at it closed. It sure does ride slim, though, and there’s definitely no central liner. They say that RRs are an excellent way to try out a different pattern, but frankly it might be difficult to find another canoe that ticks as many boxes for me as this one did right off the bat.

Now if I can get a super nice DBJ to replace the “meh” one I got on my first attempt, I will be an RR True Believer. That one would look fantastic with the fat acorn trapper getting a bit of a spring-stretch at home on the bench. :D

These two are with me today,
Sean O'Hare Splice in Afzelia burl and Mike Norris "Fire Clone' stainless damascus along with a sleeveboard whittler from Joel Chamblin, amber stag and matching Mike Norris damascus

The Duke of Damascus has spoken, and once again I am dazzled.

I received the north field 77 in red saw cut last night that I purchased of the exchange here. What a great knife. It has taken over pocket duty for the foreseeable future.

I feel like my first 77 might end up dominating the watch pocket for a long while, especially if I can manage to swing both a user and a keeper from the 2016 run. That red sawcut is super easy on the eyes, you should try to grab a snap of it. Maybe enter it into the photo contest GAW thread...?

Great knives and photos today! Got this Micarta pair with me today.

The “grain” on that red half-Congress almost looks like it could pass muster on a WW, Gary. Two real lookers right there!

Man, lots to envy today...the Fishbone Barlows, glennbad's tipped bolsters, MT's perpetually amazing Damascus and stag combos, and last (but certainly not least!) Gary's Menefee! You guys sure are doing Friday right. Here's one for what I've been doing lately...Fancy Friday!
A new pic, with some older ones that capture the character well...

You may have just kicked off a brand new tradition, Mother of Pearl March. A person could get lost in that pearl, such depth and texture! Thanks for sharing!

Totin' my Cattaraugus Swell End Jack Knife, model 22479, 3.25" closed:
Most likely a pre WWII knife with the hammered pins.
There is a faint etch on the blade that says "The Reading Railroad", which went bankrupt in 1971.

Captain Catt, you never steer us wrong! :D

Just picked up this 25 in bocote. Stunning! Nearly flawless and, a nice surprise, it came shaving sharp!

GEC manages to obtain such amazing bocote. They nailed the grain on your knife! Kinda makes me wish they offered it instead of osage on the #18s...but I digress. :D

Thanks for the comment on the yellow Case Tsar. I've found it grows on me too.
...
I'm going with a H. Dorwal and a Wenger Esquire today.

Yeller might be an acquired taste but it sure sticks around once it arrives! Like sunshine in the pocket... :D

I’m pig-ignorant when it comes to Dorwal, aside from it being some upmarket Boker product (I have a Garantie equal-ender at home which I understand was built by Boker for similar reasons). Is that acrylic or is it old enough to be celluloid? Between the handles, the blade profile and even the stamping that’s one of the more unique stock knives I’ve seen!

Today’s “thank goodness the weekend’s nearly here” pair. The yeller EE is a Queen #55 that appears to have been a display or sample knife. It’s wicked sharp and vanishes in the pocket (even a shirt pocket). Catch the light right and the handles positively glow. :)

A pattern I wasn't sure if I would like so I always skipped over it. Thought I would try it out.

Gary, that is a stunning pair of micarta customs.
Tsar, I can't really attribute it to luck. I knew the rain would come in eventually I just didn't know how hard and fast it would hit.
That Queen is one sleek little knife.

It feels like it's been ages since I have carried the presidential, so I threw it along with my opinel 9 in the pocket today.

carrying my friend for over a year now......a GEC 73, smooth banana peel UN-X-LD. Shes been thru a lot of apples, oranges, coffee bags and even took her on a coast fishing trip......bad move, she didn't like salt water!! But shes all dressed back up now and fine as can be!

It snowed this morning, just enough to look pretty for a few hours, and then gave way to the usual bleak grayness... So I apologize for the atrocious lighting in this photo.
I also had my Schrade rope knife today while out working in the fleet.

It's really a much nicer looking piece than one would guess from that picture. In better light, the wood is quite deep and mellow. Here's a shot of the same knife, taken one sunny autumn afternoon.

Bad mamajama Mark ! ;):D:D:D ( Cherry picker !!! )

I reckon you will be posting them HJ's next.

What an absolute wealth of fine pocket cutlery! :)

Great pair Jack, you look well prepared today my friend :)

Thanks Tom, you too my friend, as always

Very nice sir, may I ask the maker?

Looks to me like you're very versatile, cutlery-wise, Jack! In my optimistic moments, I might take your extremely variable weather as a sign of transition: summer is probably just around the corner! ;)

I've been trying to carry a few different ones this week GT :) Weather-wise, I've given up trying to guess what is around the corner! That's a great selection you've had with you this week, I particularly like the '85

Very stylish Gary

Absolutely stunning Joe, what a beautiful knife

Gorgeous classic Jack Mr P

I think I’m going to make it, though I’ve ended up with a rather busy weekend at a time that I was hoping for a quiet one.

Could you give us some details on that good-looking little BSA swell-center? I have a guess based on the Delrin’s color pattern and the section of the master blade that we can see, but I’m not particularly confident in my detective skills. :o

I hope you madeit TB  Sorry to hear you have to work over the weekend :( That's often the case for me, usually when the weather is at its best, but I should be OK this weekend (it's raining yet again)

I won that mid-70's Camillus BSA Whittler (BSA #1047) in a giveaway r8shellvery generously did a while back (it came with one of her lovely pocket sheaths too :) ). They were made with handles in black and white Delrin, as well as brown. Here's another pic with the blades open.

Always a pleasure to see that fantastic-looking Rope Knife

Very nice Gev :)

For old friends Friday, I toted this Kissing Crane that I got some time in the early 90s

Great to see that old friend
