What "Traditional Knife" are ya totin' today?

View media item 1585FINALLY got my hands on a knife that ive always wanted...a #77. This one came with mismatched scales and an S stamped on the tang but it was PERFECT for what I want...a user that will likely see a handle change in its lifetime. I sanded down the sawcut bone to smooth it out some and lighten the darker side and love the feel of it in my hand but unless the "Two Face/Dr Jekyll, Mr Hyde" look grows on me, it will be changed. Anyways, here it is with the modded TL29 that it is joining in the EDC rotation. They both are very close to the same size and shape and I love the jigged bone handle but this smooth bone is a nice transition as is the clip blade. I now understand more and more why some of you have so many knives in rotation for pocket carry!!!

You're killing me with that one Dee. Wish I still had mine. My grandson snapped the saw. I sold it dirt cheap and it became a pass around knife much like Earl. I wonder where it ended up? I've never been able to find a replacement.

I didn't. Two reasons.
1. I would have been told that they don't have any saw blades in stock.
2. It was my grandsons fault. Even knowing I would have to pay for the replacement blade.

Each time I've inquired about replacing a blade or covers, the answer I always get is reason #1. My only gripe with GEC. I love their knives and quality, but they never keep even the smallest inventory for warranty or general repairs on even their most popular patterns like #15's.

I don't know. He's old enough and generally responsible enough to carry a pocket knife on his own. I wasn't there when he did it. He told me he was adjusting the door striker plate to the shed at their house. I suppose it's possible, but I had my doubts at the time. ;)
Not a big deal. I reshaped the left over into a small sheepsfoot blade. :D:thumbsup: But it went to Dirk Walls and then it became the pass around knife like Earl.

You might not be asking nicely :) I've had two blades replaced, both times on knives produced 3+ years ago (the blades even were stamped with the correct year).

One of them was a sheepsfoot TC Barlow. They weren't sure if they had one and if they did it would probably have a defect. It took them a week or two to get back to me, but they found one.

When I got the knife back, the blade was absolutely perefect, was stamped with the correct year and model (it was a two blade knife) and had the TC blade etch.

And with that I think we should move off the subject. I don't want to make Gary or Frank's job any more difficult and have them ask us to take the discussion to another forum. :cool:o_O Sorry Frank and Gary.

Thanks, Gary! Now I can't decide if I should call my knife 'Sublime Scarlet' or 'True Crimson!' I must admit, I am partial to Sublime Scarlet. :)

Your RR scout is another beauty. Do the covers color match?:thumbsup:
I say if a knife is worth naming, it's probably important enough to have several aliases! ;)
Thanks for the RR scout compliment, Dean. The covers match very nicely! (I don't think I've ever had disappointing dye jobs on jigged bone from Rough Rider, but their smooth bone has occasionally been less than ideal in that regard.)

As far as threaded bolsters go Gary I think it's a compromise. If you have a simple elegant design the threaded bolsters work (see photo). If you have gnarly stag or something that is in itself eye candy then it's probably over kill. You need a balance.

Makes sense, Alan. Thanks for the input; I have very little sense of style, design, or aesthetics :(, so I appreciate all the guidance I can get!

PAL today

Not just a PAL today, Steve; that looks like a PAL for life!! ;)

It is indeed - sort of. I believe technically its a hybrid sycamore wood: http://www.wood-database.com/london-plane/

Here are some cutting boards in what I think is the same material

Thanks, Jeff; that's fascinating! I had no idea that sycamore had such unique grain!:cool:

I got banned from the keyboard forum because of that keyboard. Btw, I expect "the business" from you folks when I post in here. ;):D Also, thank you.
:D:D

I think it shows up more or less depending on lighting and angle. It doesn't show up as much in this pic.

Wow, I suppose I shouldn't be so surprised at the difference light and angle can make, but I am! Thanks for the examples!

Getting quite familiar with this knife lately, FBC, but I have no idea what else is in the photo! Some kind of bike equipment (shock absorber??)?

Stylish little sleeveboard, oldtymer!!:thumbsup::cool:

Here's what I've been carrying for the past week or so. I was lucky to find this #89 GEC with American Elk covers at a dealer last week. I'd love to see another run of these!

A shame I couldn't get my response right, I meant to say that I hadn't noticed the lock on those models before! :D

Merci beaucoup GT, et bonnes vacance :)

With me today...:)

Thanks, Jack. I don't speak or read French, but I think my high school Latin and Vietnam War era slang helped me to get the gist of your well-wishes!:D Looks like you've got the roulette wheel covered with your first-rate back/red pair today!;)

Here's a couple of more knives on vacation with me for 2 weeks. As always, the scrimshawed Rough Rider small stockman has pocket space reserved (thanks, r8shell, and thanks to Greg for the good luck coin I also carry every day :thumbsup::)):

My French is very rusty GT, I haven't travelled much these past few years. Thanks my friend, they proved a lucky pair :) Nice holiday choices

Thanks Gary!

"As always" fits that knife well.
How could you not carry it?

That's about as good as it gets, Dee! I've tried a few time to get one of those. Good show!!

Today felt like a good day to carry #10, sunny and not too rocky.

Thanks Dean!

I've always liked that one!
What would you rate it 1 to 10? :D
