What "Traditional Knife" are ya totin' today?

Since picking up a slimline trapper a few weeks ago I've really come to like the pattern. This is a beautiful example, HFinn!

I also though I would like it. You can imagine my disappointment when the knife had flaws and my joy when I finally managed to repair those flaws.

Today, I am carrying my Beer Scout Knife. The reason is simple. It was my grandmother's favorite knife in my collection! She loved the color of the jigged bone and always commented on it. She was the first person I would send a picture to of a new knife arrival. "Oh boy another one?!" Is what she would say. And then she would comment on how beautiful it was. She fought cancer like a grizzly bear, and charged it head on. She passed away yesterday. At the house her and my grandfather built. With loved one surrounding her. What a remarkable woman.

I’m very sorry to hear your grandmother died. Grandmothers are very special people. I don’t have words to make you feel better. But, since I have that exact same knife, when I get home from work today, I’ll slip it into my pocket in the way of sending you some good thoughts, and to honor the memories of both of our grandmothers.

All our hearfelt condolences, Taylor!
What incredible memories to have, being able to share one of your passions with her! She sounds like she was a wonderful person!

Very sorry to hear this, Taylor. I lost my grandmother earlier this year too and it’s a terrible loss. I’m happy you got to know your grandmother well, as I did mine — my wife’s grandparents all died when she was a child and she hardly remembers them.

Also, I agree with Jack, your grandmother clearly had great taste in knives!

The wife and I just got home from our Olympic Peninsula adventure last night after 9 long hours of driving. Spent another couple of hours last night and this morning reading each of the 300 some odd posts I missed on this thread while I was away. This was apparently a great knife weekend all around, and I truly enjoyed all of your Memorial Day posts.

First I want to give a big shout out to @Dschal for posting the rhubarb schnapps recipe for me — I didn’t get the chance to thank you before I left on my trip. I will certainly be giving it a try. I also found a recipe for a strawberry rhubarb syrup to mix into cocktails, and will also be making that when strawberries arrive at our farmer’s market.

Now, the trip. Some of you may have seen the picture I posted of the arsenal of cutlery I brought along. After four nights in the woods, 99% of the cutting over this long weekend was split between the GEC #43 and my Benchmade Mini Crooked River. The dirty and one handed stuff fell to the Benchmade, and all of the camp cooking and picnicking went to the 43.

Here’s the 43 helping to display the staggering diversity of the Olympic Peninsula at:

1) Hall of Mosses, Hoh Rainforest
2) Rialto Beach
3) My personal favorite, Picnic Area A, Hurricane Ridge
