What "Traditional Knife" are ya totin' today?

Some people wonder why guys like us just really like your old Ulster Barlow Gevo . I am not sure that I could tell them why and I probably would not even try to .Great picture of that beautiful Ulster my friend .

Harry
Thank you, my friend ! Well put indeed !

It's true Jeff, I did! This one is surprisingly very sharp but it does need a good joint flush and I'll probably lower the kick on the coping so I can pinch the main blade open. I'll enjoy in this condition for a couple days first though!
Sometimes, a factory edge is pretty impressive.
I had a Cabelas gift card burning a hole in my wallet. It took me three trips to look at their case ‘o Cases, but today I made my decision. I really wanted a large Stockman in yellow delrin, but they don’t carry any lg Stockmen. There wss a blue bone peanut, but it would not have bumped out my redbone nut. A lg Trapper in yellow looked like my choice, but I already have two lg Case 2 blade Trappers. On a whim, I asked to see one I’d never handled before. Shazzam- that’s the one. Had the guy pull out several, and bought the one with the best snap. And yes... tomorrow it goes straight in my pocket.:D
Pics tomorrow.

Wow~ incredibly nice scales:thumbsup:

Carrying this #54 Harness Jack today. I was kindly gifted this by @Campbellclanman as a runner up in a GAW not long after I joined the forum. To be honest I haven't carried it much because it had a wicked strong pull and scary closing snap. I have done some work on it by rounding the corners of the tang a bit and now the walk and talk is much better. I also reprofiled the blade slightly as the tip was too symmetrical to my eye so I flattened out the top curve of the blade. It looks much better IMO.

Thanks Duncan I hope to carry this one a lot more now

Make it yours, Steve!
54s are great, and I’d love one with a punch.

Grandpa and the beaver... This was my granddads (or great grandads) Cattaraugus. It’s certainly old, I believe it’s a sleeveboard with carbon steel boosters and no shield. I don’t know much about it/them, but I know it will go from me to one of my boys and hopefully stay in the fam.

Grandpa’s knives are the best.

Rockin the ‘18 BF Buck today. Looks like the field tiles in the farm out back are working fine. This little “creek” runs along my line into the pond across the road.

Like your old Cattaraugus very much . Does it have a Model Number on the Tang of either the blades ?

Harry
Hi Harry, no it does not have any numbers at all just "CATTARAUGUS" in a fan with "CUTLERY Co." below it straight, and below that "LITTLE VALLEY" straight all on the main blade tang. Here is a closer pic. Thanks in advance for any info you might have on it, much appreciated.

Thanks Jack, I see you’ve got Pearl, she’s looking great, enjoy it my friend. Is one of my favourite patterns although I prefer the punch version

Me too my friend, but don't tell Pearl ;)

Fantastic pic Dwight, I'm not sure whether I should have one of these next or a slipjoint :)

That's a great (and diverse) tableful!

I officially have a problem. I'm attempting to carry the Camillus scout for all of 2019. I've also been trying to add in a cool second knife from my collection, to carry and show off each day. This has been working really well for me lately........ until today. I have my trusty Camillus with me, and I've selected a Case Carhartt medium stockman to show off, but I also can't seem to remove yesterday's Case Mini-Trapper from my pocket. This Mini-Trapper is really, really sweet. It's a total "I'm in love" kind of fine. It fits my hand like it was made just for me. It looks flat out gorgeous. Fit and finish is spot on. Both blades cut like there's no tomorrow. It's actually stainless. This trapper is really working for me. I need to carry it for a while, I guess as my second knife, to see if it has the staying power that I believe it might.

So number 3 of my new loaded pocket scenario today is the Case Carhartt medium stockman. This is yet another Case medium stockman that floats about my house (Why is is always the Case medium stockmans that get relegated to continual chore duty in my home?) in search of something to cut. It doesn't live with my knife collection. It moves from room to room, drawer to drawer, table to table, whenever I have a long term project. It's the knife that my daughter knows to grab whenever I tell her to grab a knife for me. I originally purchased it, maybe five years ago from a genuine Carhartt brick and mortar store, which is pretty much a toy store for any Upstate New York outdoorsman.

I bought the Carharrt as sort of a beater knife. Kind of a do everything knife. The Rugged Duck G-10 covers provide an exceptionally good grip, even for G-10, and are effectively indestructible. The tangs and bolsters have some interesting shaping, that add to the uniqueness of the design. I love the As Ground finish on the blades, and wish more Case knives featured this finish. The shield is brass, just like the Carhartt's signature zippers. This is the knife that convinced me to give Case's Tru-Sharp stainless a real try. As much as I love higher end stainless steels, I have to admit that on a knife with this thin of a hollow grind, the Tru-Sharp works remarkably well. The grind seems to offer so little cutting resistance, that edge deformation is greatly reduced. And when a blade starts to dull a bit, it still cuts reasonably well because of that thin grind. It's even a relatively easy stainless to sharpen, requiring no more than an Arkansas stone and a strop.

Other than it not having a cover material with greater collector pedigree, it's pretty much the perfect slipjoint. Fit and finish is excellent. Better than most Case knives, IMHO, because of the As Ground finish. I don't have to take care of it in the least, except for the occasionally sharpening. The crazy thin grinds cut better than most traditionals in my collection, and it didn't even cost me that much money. It's hardly Case's prettiest knife ever, but it must come very close to being the most functional knife they've ever made. I think it very fitting that it bears the Carhartt name, as it embodies so many of Carhartt's historic qualities.

Buzz, that Mini Trapper looks great! Is that what Case calls "Bone Stag"? I have a few knives like your Carhartt Case that I keep around the house -- not all that nice or fancy, but they're cut well, and you don't have to worry about beating 'em up. I like Case's as-ground finish, although I only have one, a big Sodbuster, which lives in my truck's center console.

Three Blade Thursday!!!

That's a good looking knife! I know some people complain about GEC jigged bone when it's patterned/not-random, but I think that one looks great!

Schrade 5OT
Wonderful knife.

I've been looking for a 5OT like that (non-stainless with a blade in good shape), but all I seem to find are either Schrade+, have blades sharpened down to an ice pick shape, or both! :D

Nice photo!

I've got this WLST in Unicorn Ivory Acrylic with me today.

José the grain on that lamb is just superb. Wow.

Fantastic pic Dwight, I'm not sure whether I should have one of these next or a slipjoint
The only safe choice would be one of each! :D Thank you Jack.
