Got up at 11pm last night to get the smoke rolling at midnight. I’ll spend the weekend smoking about 65lbs of BBQ and a gallon of homemade sauce so I need a knife that can take a bit of abuse... but this old war horse 307 has had a life time of work already so it seems fitting it will work this last holiday weekend before retirement. I feel honored to carry this old knife that served someone well for so many years. I hope you all have a great weekend and HAPPY BIRTHDAY AMERICA!!! View attachment 1370828

Darn it. We already have commitments, and can’t make it.:(

If I may ask, how and why do you retire a knife? I have one that I won’t often carry, my Granddad’s four line, ebony, Camillus EO Jack. It was his “good” knife~ the one he taught me sharpening on. The secondary’s back spring is broken, and the main is no longer as full as it once was. After a long time casually looking, I found an identical model in better shape to carry, and it still reminds me of him.
But all my other veterans get carried and used.

edit: I know better than ask for your secret bbq sauce recipe:D

when I “ retire” a knife it’s normally an old well used one that’s been put out to pasture that I’ll buy and carry for a couple days then put them into what my wife calls a “ shrine” and I like to think of as a pile of stories. Several started out as place holders in my collection as I waited to find one in like new condition. They are all Camillus and Schrade made Buck stockman.
It started as a cigar box but I thought these old boys deserved better so I found the crystal ? Vase at an antique store and it holds them on my dresser where I can reach in and grab one and think about where it’s been and what’s it’s done. They get pulled out from time to time to cut a string or a tag. Sometime they find their way to a neighbor kids pocket or a friend of my daughters. Mostly they just relax with each other. View attachment 1371075 As for the sauce recipe, I’ll gladly share it. BBQ is to be shared, it’s only good when people are together enjoying it. I’ll warn you though it’s a rather sweet sauce. It’s a takeoff of a rib glaze I used when I cooked competitions a life time ago. My family really likes sweet sauces so they were always asking me to make extra rib glaze so I finally tone it down a little into a rather sweet but also spicy Smokey sauce that pretty much goes with anything as long as you like sweet. It would probably get you kicked out of the Carolinas and laughed out of Texas but oh well. Pm me an email and I’ll fire it off to you.

It's Friday again already?!? Seems like Just yesterday it was February ...

Since tomorrow (07/04) is a special holiday here, I guess I'll carry a couple quintessential "American" patterns for the week.
(Yeah ... Yeah ... I know ... One is (probably) really a British/European pattern that got "adopted" by the Yanks early on...)
Ulster Number 10 Barlow.
GEC 852211 Harness Jack.
MARBLES MR278 "Demo" knife.
SK Blades "Smoke Jumper" Buck 110LT.

Sowbelly stockman and premium canoe this week are both ram's horn models from Marbles:

"Regular" stockman this week is a Schrade 897UH with stainless blades but carbon steel springs (thanks, Keith):

This Rough Rider white bone canoe started life in my "budget canoe" category, but then it became a unique work of art (thanks. Rachel):

So, of my three hotdog choices I opted for this one today. My first GEC knife. It's not a very popular model but I'm kind of partial to it. I really like the red line micarta handles, hopefully those show up on a new drop soon.

Popularity means nothing ;) It's elegance and taste that matters :cool:

hello strangers. Ain’t been around much. Not much to show as I’ve only been carrying my Dunlap and ryu stockmans. Hate to keep posting the same knives! And I’m not looking for much so ain’t been here shopping. But as always, all of you porch dwellers are on my mind and in my prayers. That’s said....

Met an old timer newish maker in a town near me today. Friend put me in touch with him a few weeks back. I asked him to make me a knife. No rules, no requests. This is what he turned out. Strawberry jigged bone and the copper colors just compliment each other perfectly. It’s AEB-L. And it’s just wonderful little knife, not perfect and never want it to be perfect! Oh, and it has ball bearing pivot! He said he was worried about a bushing or a hole wearing the copper pin to fast so he put a tiny little caged ball bearing he polished to width like a bushing. It’s pretty sweet! Thought y’all might like to see it. If anyone is interested I can put you in touch.

It sounds delicious! PM sent, thank you!
I like the crystal display. I have cigar boxes... some organized, others not so much.

I personally love the 38.
I’m just not in the acquiring phase, or I’d get one.

It has both, and certainly looks like it has functionality as well!
