I guess it's not a common expression.Excessive is a relative term. There are probably folks that think carrying more than one knife is excessive, but I doubt many of them hang out on knife forums.

The last time I bought half a hog, back in the ‘80s, I rendered the fat and ended up with a cast iron dutch oven of lard. Best thing on earth for baking and frying.
Lard got a lot of hate from the health industry, but that may be changing. We are learning that carbohydrates are the real culprit in causing serum cholesterol, and the industrial chemicals in fat substitutes are worse than the animal fats.
I digress...
But when you render lard, you end up with a rather large hunk, so I think that blade shape would be perfect for cutting it up into usable chunks.

Wonder if that relates to the old saying that you should never buy a car built on a Friday or Monday... On Friday they’re starting the weekend early, and on Monday, they’re hungover.
The Sheffield cutlers were particularly observant, with the practice continuing at least until the 1980's, and with some cutlers even worshipping Saint Tuesday and Saint Wednesday!
