What was the spyderco that got you hooked?

Spyderco Captain got me hooked. There was just something about the construction, and the heft when you put it down on a solid surface. But the Spyderco that hasn't left my pocket in the last four years is the Harpy.

My first Spyderco I bought 10 years ago got me hooked...lost it on a job site after about 2 years, and had an identical replacement in my pocket by the end of the week. I still have it, and it has seen some use...including a 275 foot fall (Closed) when it got pushed out of my tool pouch as I was climbing through a torsion resistor on a tower with a narrow face width. I'll include a picture of the knife (FRN Native in CPM S30V), and a gratuitous picture from about 275 feet for context sake...the knife landed on gravel, and if I didn't point out the mark on the handle to you, you'd probably never see it...the knife is still absolutely fine and I still carry it from time to time, but I carry my newer Spydercos more often because most of them are nicer and more refined designs.

Note to self: Always wear a hard hat working with 3rdGenRigger. ;)

Good story and pictures, thanks.

Spyderco Tenacious. I received it as a gift and I wasn t into knives yet and I didn t even know that I got a quality brand knife.

Spydie Sage 1! I had been using a kershaw blackout but wanted something with nicer steel and build quality. I hadn't really looked at spyderco but the reviews sold me so I got the Sage and I was obsessed after about a day using it and never looked back. Now Ive got all the Sages and tons more.. Carrying a brown delica 4 today...:)

Once I bought an ambitious without knowing anything about spyderco. Then I got a Techno, than a Leafstorm, than a Southard, than a Stretch Super Blue..

The better question is, what Spyderco do you have to buy to get unhooked?!?

Endura about 25yrs ago. Plastic clips back then, I broke more than one. So I don't have my first or second. I do have about 8or9 of them now.

I bought a solid stainless steel SE knife in the late 1980s that sort of resembled a Delica. I got it a the NY knife show, I think from Sal himself. One of my mentors in the film business took me to the show and helped me pick out a good work knife. Don't remember what happened to that one.

It's hard to say which one... I bought a Tenacious first, and really liked it. Then, as I was eyeing the Paramilitary 2 online, I was very curious as to why someone would pay $125 for a knife. The curiosity was eating at me. So I saved for one. I think this is the one that really did it for me. I fell in love on day one. Now I have 6 Spydercos, and have seen several come and go. They are, by far, my favorite knives.

Now my very first Spyder I ever got and used was the GIN-1 Mariner model which I got all the way back to 1995 and I used and kept it for a long time. But the one that really sold me on how great Spyderco's quality is was the JD Smith model. That was the one that I think really convinced me of how great they are.

My very first Spyderco fixed blade model I got and I still have it and I still use it a lot is the Temperance 1 model. I got the PE & the SE versions both and I use them both on a regular basis.

The one model that really made me a fanatic was the big C-44 Dyad. That was like having 2 of Spyderco's best knives all in one package. That's basically what got me hooked.

My first was a cricket-actually two of them. I lost them over the years. Re-joined the addiction with a Persistence.

Today I'm rolling with a Delica and Tenacious.

My first was the spyderco kitchen knife for the woman. I brought it home from a gun show. She loved those serrations and wondered why they aren't on pocket knives and couldn't believe how cheap the knife was. Thus, since she's also a flag nut, I got her a stars and stripes Q for an aniversary. Finally, for me, the G10 Harpy on deep discount from SMKW...that was my personal first.

My 1st Spydie hooked me in the 90's. The classic, plain edge Delica clipit, with the molded pocket clip. How could I not love a light easily deployed pocket scalpel. Held an edge well, and easy to sharpen. I know own 2 Delicas, an old Michael Walker, a new Michael Walker, Endura4, Lum Chinese, PM2, and a Wayne Goddard Sprint. Oh yeah, and a Sharp Maker....what an incredibly versatile system.
