Got a liner lock and a couple neck knives in the works…

Started the heat treat oven for a blade and decided to see if in that time I could start another blade from scratch. This took about 25-30 minutes from a flat bar to this.... I guess not really impressive but still fun

Don't post a lot here lately.
I finished a wedding present for my grandson, Zeph, and his bride. They are both culinary trained.
A honesuku in stainless suminagashi. Core is W-2. Grind is ryoba Handle is carbon fiber G-10. Saya is lacewood, and mekugi is ebony.
Mark is my kanji - BLADESMITH.
First two photos show the proper way to remove the saya. Still have to wax and hand buff the saya.

I added some poor shots of something I do for fun. I have a fantastic reticulated filbert - AKA "Harry Lauder's Walking Stick". I have to trim the suckers and lower branches constantly. I set them aside to dry and use the larger ones to make true Harry Lauder's walking sticks from them. The smaller pieces I like to carve snake heads to fit and paint green, brown, and black. Small one is a green snake. The larger one in the photo is a rattlesnake. I set them around the landscaping sometimes when we have a big party. Always gets a laugh when one gets spotted.
I'll post some better shots after I paint them.

I've hesitated from posting here before because you all post such beautiful work and I'm just a beginner. This may not be up to the standards of some here, but I'm working on it. This one is for a friend who wanted something for her grandson for his birthday. I think it came out pretty nice. Also posted in the "Purple haze" thread.

There is a certain satisfaction that comes from making a custom knife for someone who wants it for a gift to a young person. Hopefully they recorded the exchange so you could see the look in their eyes when they opened the box.

This is the first one I mirror polished. I think a satin finish will be better.

Well, on the good side, it is easy to go back to a satin finish from a mirror polish.

Nice kiritsuki, BTW. I really like your taper from the handle to the ricasso. Very durable and good for grip and cleaning.

Been too hot outside to have the shop open so I decided to work on a few odds and ends I’ve been putting off. I’ve been wanting a fixture/hold down plate and haven’t been able to find quite what I wanted so I decided to make one. If you’ve never hand lapped a piece of 7”x12”x 3/4” cold roll flat bar on a surface plate you just haven’t lived. It only took three or four days and is a tremendous upper body workout. It’s finally flat on one side. The back is probably to dished too worry with but I’ve been trying to work it down with my disk sander. I got plenty of hole drilling practice too. Now I have to tap them all. When my arms got tired of lapping I started cleaning up and squaring the multitude of drill vises I apparently bought in a rum fueled eBay rampage. I’ve gotten 5 and apparently still have active bids on more. Who knows how many I’ll end up with once it’s all over. I’ve got 3 of them tuned up so far. I also broke down 3 hammers to clean up for my collection. I think I’ll be able to salvage the handles on all three.

Almost done with this package. Still got to clean the blades up and make one more sheath.


Working on this skinner. Blade is done except for edge. Antler in the middle with dyed curly maple on the ends. Will have a deer mosaic pin in the middle of the antler.

**side note** I am now an official bladeforums “knifemaker”. Will be posting some for sale on here in the near future.

That's a beautiful dark brown color, might I ask what dye you chose for it?
