Aaron there are better ways at hand sanding then spending hours doing it.

Watch Karl Andersons video series where he talks about hand sanding and how it really only takes minutes if done correctly.

Also look at Nathans set up for sanding his blades on his grinder the pretty much eliminates hand sanding.

When I hand sand a blade I feel like I am cheating by using cork belt in 400 grit then cork to 1000 grit and then maybe 10-15 minutes to hand sand to 800 grit.

Hand sanding for hours is not an option

wait... there is an option besides hand sanding for hours? i am logging back off and hitting youtube. Most of my time is spend angrily scrubbing scratches out of my hunters till i finally get a finish i can call acceptable.

Robert,
Are you doubling your grits through the progression of belts? I do 36, 60, 120 grits and then to finishing.

I don't do mirror finish as I make working culinary knives, Perhaps if you stay at the 120 grit belt a little longer and also I've found that the finer the grit the more important that it's a fresh belt when it comes to eliminating scratches.

Finishing out the tail end of my latest HT, before I go nuts on the last minute Xmas rush.

I like the new tanto dashi/necker, came out pretty cool. It is staying skeleton, I'm doing jade g10 on the harpoon, and LS CF on the dashi.

Hot damn Ian, those look amazing!

Ian, would you mind going through your grinding process? Every grind I've seen from you has been amazingly clean...

Here is what i tried last night for the first time. So I got it in my head to try a forge weld. I decided to keep it simple and not try a whole stack, so I took 2 pieces of 15n20 I had and put one on either side of a piece of 1095. Tacked the corners and gave it a whirl. I used borax and cleaned all the steel on the grinder. My results were part fail part success. I managed a pretty good weld. But by the time I roughed out the blade and flattened the billet and ground it, I had very little 15n20 left on my 1095. I either need to be more careful forging. Or use thicker steel. But I learned a lot. This one will probably go in the scrap pile. But I will be trying again some time. Any other tips?

Thanks guys. I'm terrible about taking pics while I work. Always gotta get that next little bit done. I've been meaning to do a start to finish WIP on my hidden tang hunters for a while now.

I'll see if can't snap a few while I'm working on this handle.

Got the guard done, hope I can get this handle glued before I run out of juice.

Ian,
You aren't getting out of this one, A commentary on your process:encouragement::applause::applause: PleeZZe!

Haha Ok I'll do it on the next one. If I can con someone into coming over for a couple hours maybe even a video (likely not, who am I kidding)

I did take some pics shaping the handle for that knife. Gonna post a mini-wip in a few.

Haha, sorry Ian! Seems I started a bit of a thing for you there...

I would love to help with the video but unfortunately I'm a bit far away. At some point I think it would be really awesome to spend a month or so touring the US visiting with all you guys, documenting your processes and touring your shops on video.. Might be a bit of a stretch that unfortunately.

No worries. I just had my first student last week, kinda strange. Don't really feel like an expert on anything, just try my best and always keep pushing myself and my equipment.

I'm finishing out a beefy clip point (for me at least) sometime in the next few days, so hopefully I can fit in a grinding wip on that one... I'm doing a lot of clip grinding freehand nowadays, but I do it by ear so it's a bit hard to explain over the internet. I'll probably post how I do them when I use the rest.

Ian,
I am jammed up with holiday orders now too but we can't be that far apart both living in S. Cal? Pm me your address, contact info and maybe we can get together and have a few laughs after the smoke clears? Or maybe a local hammer/grind in?
