A month or so back, the sliding shelf where I store my handle material broke. This weekend I fixed it.

Yesterday I played around with some handle-material pre-visualization for a new project.

(I'm leaning toward the Claro Walnut)

I also did some heat treating. This was the second time around for the two little guys -- one was warped, and I ruined the temper on the other by grinding too hot -- but they both look good this time around.

Good times on the horizon!

Since my grinder is not pretty enough to deserve it's own thread, I present my slapped-together, hastily designed, and perfectly functioning beauty of an ugly grinder. Made it up as I went along, made with a MIG welder and the two tools sitting next to it on the bench. Frame budget was about $100 including lots of nuts and bolts.

Plan on making a new platen soon with a good machined surface and hardened steel, it also needs to stand off from the arm more for clearance, which became obvious as soon as I used it, then looked at everyone else's. Still, I was half ready for the thing not to work at all, and it tracks, tensions, and grinds like a champ.

And here's a recently finished knife in S30V, one of the first that saw the new grinder in action.

I guess I never posted finished pics of that blade I was working on a couple pages back. Here's a few:

I was making a stacked leather and brass handle knife.. but it broke during handle shaping due to an overly hard blade.

So I reused the left over blade and..

Holly wood handle and mirror polished!

It's only little, something like a neck knife.

The remaining handle was turned into an awl for a relative to being leather working! :) nothing wasted.

It was clearly a file, did you tempered it? 200~250C should be OK, otherwise it will break again almost for sure.

I tempered it by eye with a blow torch. It passed the file test during reshaping and sharpened up easily. And as it'd so small I figure the extra hardness it may still have won't be an issue due to the practicality of abusing such a small knife.

I do have more files though, that I will turn into larger knives. All reputable brands from England. Do you advise I just temper them too? and not a total reheat treat and then temper?

Samon, when I made knives from files I always normalized the steel, shaped it and the gave it proper HT following 1095 or W2 datasheets.

So we've moved...again. Hopefully for the last time for a while. I've been doing a bunch of small side projects until I can get the new mill and grinder up and running. In the meantime, I've been doing some axe restoration, and a lot of customized opinels. Shockingly, they've actually paid for most of the new equipment.

A new bottle opener variant in our Rustic line. Ranger paint scheme.

Some of the hatchet handles...

Part of the mill...

And early experiments in a stonewash finish....

Pablo, where do you find all these colors of paper micarta? I can only find a few solid colors. I like the ivory. I don't want real drastic color differences, but I do want some grain to show. Will it show in solid colors?
Busy week ends like this:
