I LOVE sharpening stuff like this!

Off hand sharpening finished double edge work with many hours in it is a rare opportunity for the kids to learn exciting new words from dad! :)

This is my second integral this year and the last for a while. Makes my hair fall out...

The builders are in the process of building the new garage.

When the new garage is done then this entire thing becomes my shop! I won't have to work around lawnmowers, snowblowers, yard tools and Christmas decorations any more!

I've picked up a few small new tools to help make life easier for me....

123 blocks immediately made my sucky drill press not suck so bad. Incredible!

How does the 123 blocks make your drill press better? I have seen them before but wasn't sure if I could find a use for it. I do have a budget drill press too.

Thought I would share something especially for the budget knifemaker. I wanted to do a stonewashed finish on a couple knives and have not purchased a tumbler or made one yet. So I went to harbor freight and picked up some media and noticed the container had a good size opening so I took out about half of the media or a little over and I tossed in one blade and manually tumbled for about 4-5 minutes and I thought it turned out pretty good. Here are the 2 I did.

Another good budget idea is the random orbit sander. I haven't used if in a complete knife but I did test it on some metal once and it seemed to give a good stonewash finish. Playing around with different grits might give you different results too.

Here are some 52100 EDC knives I have been working on:

On Tuesday a friend gave me an old 9" steel disc he found at an estate sale. I drew up a design for a 56C fave mount grinder bracket and had a student plasma cut it out for me. Then I went to the surplus yard and found a brand new 3/4HP Inverter Baldor wrapped in plastic. Bought it for $65 and when I got home I noticed that theres some shaft coming out the other end of the motor. So now I have to decide if I want another flat wheel or a 1* wheel for the other end. I originally planned on making the table removable but I won't be planning to put a table on the other end. I wired it up and it worked fine with my 1HP VFD. I wasn't sure if it would.

Thanks Corey, out of any other skill to have it is the most versatile, and that's why I make my living teaching it. It opens up so many possibilities. It's also why my belt grinder cost me like $350 with VFD and why this disc cost me $65

Pablo, I bet you would pick up lots of sales if you went on line with that paper micarta you are making. I think that pattern is terrific.

I just finally figured out getting wireless internet from the house to the shop... so I'm typing this from my workbench! Now I can stream Pandora or Youtube music out here, to work to... plus, waste a lot of time on internet tangents when I should be working!

It's good and fast too.

In other news, I got a 4.5" Rock Island vise in a trade, as well as an almost new 12 speed large benchtop drill press.
Also, I rigged up an old DeWalt radial arm saw to cut strips from 15n20 bandsaw stock, for pattern welding material. Works quite well.
I'm working on slowing my 20" bandsaw down, for metal. In addition to the VFD it already runs on, and the 1:5 retrofit pulley ratio, I'll be adding a jackshaft for further reduction to get a smooth powerful 90 sfpm. I hate quickly burning up expensive blades, running them a bit too fast.

looks like you have a CNC plasma cutter that is helpful to :D where did you get your motor and VFD?

Im lucky enough to live by a pretty good surplus yard that will sell motors for $65. That was the price I paid for both the disc motor and the belt motor. I do have access to a cnc plasma at work. The new school that I start running in August has one as well but it will be extremely hard to use as I'll have to walk right past a brand new flowjet to use it lol. The VFD I got off eBay. Yeah nothing is sealed but so far everything is working just fine. I blow everything out and shop vac it every time I go in the shop. Link to my belt grinder build. http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1244694-Eerf-grinder-build-a-long I plan to build a new grinder that has horizontal ability here pretty soon.

I'd love to see the horizontal flipping grinder when you get to it. Must be nice to have those kind of tools around.....

Getting this beastly custom finished for someone today. S90V and Carbon Fiber with Cherry Wood bolsters. 60rc + cryo @ Peter's. This blade marks the 29th knife completed to date :)

Frank, I would love to open the US market, but shipping single sheets is very expensive, since each weights 2 pounds (900grams) I sold 3 on ebay and the shipping killed the deal for me, it was a loss. What I need is a distributor and do a proper export and not single sheets.

If you like that pattern, you would love the possibilities, for example, I can make, lets say, black with a red liner in one piece, you cut it and voila! instant scales with liners, no glueing of parts...

[edit] I'm not making them, I have them made for me by a local factory, its an industrial process.

Thanks for the comment!

Been messing with some AEB-L, this blade has a Peter's HT, and Bocote scales. Made it for just carrying on my belt, nothing super particular. I like the steel a lot, it's .136 I purchased from Alpha. Takes an edge that reminds me of a carbon steel.
