So, I worked about 12 hours so far this weekend at my shop, which is actually the secondary rear shop at the construction company where I work. Ive slowly been bringing in all my tools and starting to lay claim to spaces around the shop haha. I already have my forge and anvil just right outside the door too.
Forgive the makeshift table; I plan to make a real table of my own eventually.
Now that I have this cheap 1X30 belt grinder, my bevels have improved 100%. I couldnt be more pleased with this birthday gift.
Here is the last knife I did using the 1 inch bench stone to do everything:
Now here are 2 knives I have been working on for my mom and her boyfriend.
One is a flat ground small, uh utility knife. My mom does a lot of painting and general crafts, so I figured she might could use a small, thin sharp knife around her little craft room.
1084 steel, with a Purple Heart handle (or it will have that once finished.)
The second is again 1084, this time with a Maple handle; I used that wood because he found it for me special to make knives with. Any tips on making maple handles like this look really nice in finishing would be appreciated
It's currently sanded to like 400 grit sloppily. I had planned to sand up to 2000, apply a light coat of this "pecan" stain I have, polish it some more and then oil it... I am very new to actually working wood however...
Both have been heat treated, the second one needs just a little finishing work before I put the handle on, and then sharpen it. The Top one needs its final post heat treat grind and the rest of the work from there
Speaking of that Purple Heart, I found a place called Winsor Plywood near my apartment. They have all sorts of exotic hardwoods, for VERY cheap compared to what I would pay online. I got that big block of Purple Heart for $40, and I can get about a dozen handles out of that I expect. Though Its not as convenient as having precut scales its a hell of a lot of savings.
They had all kinds of stuff, for $50 I could get enough cocobolo for a dozen handles, or for $35 I could get enough tiger wood for that many. It goes on and on, my new favorite store. No more paying $15 for one set of scales and then waiting 2 weeks for them to arrive.
