A little kiridashi of sorts I made out of leftover Damascus from HHH. Still getting used to messing with Damascus. Don't think I etched long enough. Hemp wrapped and razor sharp. Made a little pouch for it to stay in our utility drawer

Last of this Santoku batch. It's not saying a lot, but it's the best of the bunch I think. Slight misalignment in the handle and blade longitudinally. Not too bad.
You ever notice the better you get at sanding the more flaws you see?

Thats Beautiful!

I am finishing three knives right now and I really didn't feel like mirror polishing them. Especially because one had a few areas with some deeper imperfections I wasn't going to be able to get. So I decided to go with a matte finish. I saw hand rubbing and I was going to try that perpendicular to the blade. I also thought about using a random orbit sander which did an ok job on a test piece a while back. But now I have tried these, they are plastic wire brushes with abrasives imbedded inside.
Here is a link http://www.amazon.com/Dico-50-3-Wheel-Assorted-Brushes/dp/B001F527SW/ref=sr_1_22?ie=UTF8&qid=1446969956&sr=8-22&keywords=plastic+wire+brush+abrasive

Well I went with the coarse first. 80 grit is says and it put a decent sort of brushed finish. Would have liked it a little finer but oh well. I then tried to move up to the next, 120 or 150? and then to the fine, 240 grit. Well for some reason the medium and fine didn't do a good job at taking out the marks left by the coarse. Had I started with the medium I might have come out with a nice finish.I tried the fine in the beginning but it just didn't seem to do enough. They are very easy to use, chuck them in the drill press and have at it. So now I am debating on whether I am going to keep the finish I have to go try a hand rubbed finish using sanding paper and a sanding block. The blade profiles are convex so not as easy as an angle grind. Here are some phone pictures, of one of the blades. Pleas tell me what you think of the results. I should add that they were sanded on the belt sander till approximately 220 (i think) before I did this.

I went to the KA75 site. Interesting design. At first I thought the dual piston deals would get in the way but it appears you can work all the way around and in between them as well. What drew you to that particular unit?

I would love a power hammer. To me that one looks like it has:

-Simple design - ease of maintenance
-Price is right
-Seems like it has good power too
-Small footprint
-Don't need a monster air compressor

No auto run feature but I'm not sure how much that would detract from the ease of use of the unit. Does it need anything specific underneath it or is just a normal garage-type concrete floor enough?

It does need a pretty big air compressor. 5hp (real 5hp, not '5hp peak rated') with a 60 gallon tank to provide 10cfm at 125psi . That's a lot of air. Settled on this hammer after talking with Nathan Robertson a lot it's to complement my 110lb Dupont mechanical hammer. While it's a 'single blow' hammer, you can get a good rhythm going tapping your foot up and down.

That's a cool little knife. I like the pouch also.

Only about a week I think..Been making new dies for it lately. Drawing dies, deep fullering dies and punch dies.

Thanks that's a pretty quick turnaround. I have been really tempted to get one. Maybe Santa will bring me one for Christmas.

First time grinding N690. Much harder than AEB-L to work in the hardened state but came out pretty nice.

wow josh. You've been doing some killer grinds.

What are the final finishes there? Is that a flat grind or hollow? Can't quite tell from the photo.

Sweet grind! What's the blade length on that one? I really like how understated the swedge is. Can you post a pic of the entire knife from the side?

that is some fantastic looking Micarta... correct me if i'm wrong but you have that made for you right? as in, it's not available commercially for normal fools like myself to get a hold of some?

Please contact me via PM.
