First attempt at a hamon. Clayed the back of this 1084 chisel grind and quenched in warm canola. Im sure I can do better with at least an interrupted brine quench. I first need to overcome my tingdangitaphobia. I am pleasantly surprised by the micarta, it is from the clearance section on usaknifemaker. It states it has light and dark sections, but I think it finished up well. This one also schooled me that I am a freehand grinder for life. I started it with a jig I made, but it just wasn't happening, so I switched back to freehand 1/3 of the way through.

Ok, I fighted with lazyness for 1 week.
Time to go back to work and finish 6 Gryphons IV from 3mm O1 (Bohler K460) ( 3 to be precision ground, 3 already grounded on SG)

As for grinders I will run my MQL system as mister with siphone coolant supply. Fogless MQL going for Drill, bandsaw , Lathe etc.

Found a mammoth tooth at a flea market today. Bought it from a collector for a really nice price.
Anyone got any tips for stabilizing/cutting? I have a pressure and vacuum tank.

I just put together a new small utility.

Nothing fancy, but it's scary sharp and will do fine by my side.

O1 at 62 HRC, 3 mm thick and sharpened at 15 dps.

Just finished up this boning knife rehandle. It's Redwood burl with a tru oil finish. I learned a lot about partial hidden tang knives and tru oil on this one.

I read an old thread about normalizing and thought I would try it this time and it seemed to make my hamon have more contrast

I imagine that starting out with a more evenly sized and distributed structure would make any transitional zones that much more dramatic.

It almost looks like you have some "wootz" going on there. Maybe just camera wizardry.

Second set in three weeks. Been working at a snails pace, but I am always grateful to be able to get my hands dirty in the shop. :)

Larseje I would post that question in a new thread. I would really like to hear what folks have to say and would certainly appreciate it if you posted a WIP of the process from having it stabilized to cutting it in to scales and finishing it on a knife. I have heard mammoth tooth is very difficult to work with but it is one of my favorite handle materials.
