Josh,
Add a apple vinegar, instead of water to the home brew salt etch.

Laurence,
I will give that a shot. Only apple vinegar or will other types of vinegar work as well? Thank you for the tip by the way.

Adam, Pablo,
Thank you gentleman! :D

Blessings,
Joshua

Others may work?
the Apple stuff is filtered and I don't think all of the other kinds are? You don't want chucks of stuff in the etchent ;)

I also use the Apple stuff to etch all of my carbon steel Damascus blades.

It takes longer, sometimes a day if its winter time but I can just pour it down the drain when I'm done with it and don't have to worry about Kids, Pets, etc getting into it. Any Supermarket and some 99 cent stores have it.

A custom order completed. My Mossy trail design, with redwood burl scales. W2 steel with a clay quenched hamon. (I need to get my light box up and running again).

Edit: some better photos...

It's mild steel over a W2 core.

The wife does all the flower carving and I do the basket and border stamping, brands, initials etc as well as the construction of the sheaths.

I made all the knives that went inside these guys too but don't have a group shot of all the knives. Here's a few individuals:

This is my Sonoran Hunter model and the only one I've ever done in dammy which was at the customers request and with customer supplied mammoth tooth.

Set of three Buckaroo models for one order. Sheephorn for the handles with red liners.

Set of three Cowboys that were donated to a ranch roping as prizes. Same as my Buckaroo model just out of AEB-l at 62RC instead of the dammy. Elk handles on these guys from local sheds. Working in big groups like this keeps me out of the bars I guess.

I found an anvil finally, and it didn't break the bank! It's a 150 lb Peter Wright, in decent shape. Now I just have to build a stand for it.

Thanks jocky and Stark. Stark I get em from Ann at Sheffield's Knife Supply.

Just Hardened those 5 guys from Bohler K460 5mm (O1) :D (4x Grendel mk.IV 1x Sphinx mk.IV)

And something from 2,5mm NCV1 5x 200mm Santoku and 1x 200mm Yanagiba sit in the kiln after 2h with 650*C :D

Hi guys, I'm new to knife making and I definitely appreciate the knowledge and community on this forum. I've made some smaller blades before but this current project im working on is a beast of a blade in comparison. The steel im using is 3/16 D2. I've included some pics of the different stages of progress. At the time of this post I'm almost ready to send it off for heat treatment.
