A friend wanted to make his own knife, so as he was working on that I thought, you know, that would look good 2x as long, and made myself one to test a few things. 1- 80crv2 with a very fine edge as a chopper, 2- how durable my home made Alumilite honeycomb scales are and 3- cork belt finishing and 4- Rick's "plunge grinds are over rated" :D. It cuts like a laser and so far no deforming in chopping even though the edge is backed up by maybe .015". 60 RC.

Wow that's insanely nice!!! I love that honey comb

Finished up the kitchen knife set I posted pictures of earlier. Really like how they turned out. AEB-L and box elder.

Very nice knife. How did you make the scales?

Nice set. That box elder is really nice. What's the blade thickness? Thought about making my wife a nice set (in the far future) for putting up with me getting started in my hobby.

@Lo/Rez - That aluminum honeycomb material can be found on Ebay. After getting some of that it's as simple as pressure casting it in Alumilite colored how you choose. Quite easy. I do make sure to pour the resin over the top of the honeycomb, as I'm afraid the cells being separated from being resin bonded to each other would weaken the thing. And that surface becomes the bottom of the scale, so there is at least .080-.1" thickness of uninterrupted urethane holding it together. Also sharp corners are a no-no because the honeycomb and urethane bond seems to crumble on a real sharp corner.

When I do this again I will size the honeycomb for the scales being made, rather than making just a 2x6 block, so that I can keep a border of resin all the way around it.

Josh good to see you back!
First 2 knives off the grinder neither are good enough to send off for HT but I can see progress and I'm getting more confident.

Put them aside for about a year when you're done. Come back to them in a year and you'll see how much more steel you remove to finish them.

That's what I planned on doing. That much more really n3eds to come off? Jeez

I only meant that in general and not specifically about your blades. When I started and probably a lot of people's first knives had plenty of extra steel in places and when you refine your designs you'll be surprised how much steel you remove. The same usually goes with handles.

Oh ok I got ya. Everytime I grind one I learn something new. I got 5 feet of aebl so hopefully I get one thats good enough. Gonna try setting my plunge with a chainsaw file next knife.
