So I finally put on my big boy pants and made a proper grinder... just finished making the platen today and found out that everything is not quite right... sigh! Oh well I'll get it all nailed down eventually! It doesn't track quite right. It runs straight, with no wobbles, but it won't track down the center of the platen.

Nice grinder. You'll get it worked out. One thing I might recommend is since your platen is as wide as it is, cut some of the metal out of the center and out of the angle iron that the platen plate attached too. You're find you'll be able to use that side of the platen more for shaping. I'm about to do modify mine in the next few days. I can hardly use the left edge of the belt to shape stuff as I hit the metal that is there and it blocks that side off.

Thanks for the advise, I noticed that already, but hadn't really worked out what to do about it yet!

Working on these two drop points for a father/ son. Not sure how I feel about the looks of the layered g10 yet. I think it's just because I was expecting a different look. Starting to hand sand now so I'll see how it progresses.

Looks good Josh. I've used a similar g10 before and honestly the layered stuff can be a little iffy depending on your sculpting. That said I think that knife looks pretty good.

Thank you. I think next time I will use a little thicker material. At 1/4" it doesn't leave room for much shaping. Everyone I've showed it to likes it and it's starting to grow on me. I think I just had the end result pictured differently.

You finally put on your Big Boy Pants! I hope you weren't grinding naked before! I bet those sparks burn!:D

When you have a few more $$ Get yourself some hard Rubber coated 2" wheels for your two wheels on the platen, You can use them to shape and hollow grind with better tracking, with less slipping & vibration overall. I use those 2" all of the time to drop a tip, De Horn a spine, etc...

Got it ground to 120gr And I really need to work on my grinding. Anyways here's the knife. There's just something about this blade shape that seems off.

I agree about the blade shape, but it's coming along well enough now. To me it looks like the spine rolls down a bit too far, so it meets the tip at along the center line of the blade. I did my first blade sort of like this, then changed it so the tip is higher up & the spine is flatter. It looks like there's still enough "meat" on this shape to flatten the entire spine a bit & change the line, without affecting the grip & making it uncomfortable. Remember, they're all practice, so just keep plugging along!

That is def an upgrade I am looking forward to. Def glad I'm not on the harbor freight any longer, but the aluminum 2" wheels would be a lot nice had I went with the rubber coated ones. That and a glass platen.

I will give that a shot thanks. I believe it was tim hancock that said "first 100 knives don't count"

Yep, & Ansel Adams said you really don't know how to take pictures, until you do the first 10,000 to learn from. Not there yet, I guess......

Unless I can fix the shape of this one I won't even send it off to heat treat. I have high expectations for myself. I know I'm not there yet but I'm trying like hell

Heat treat it. Another 10 or 15 bucks and you have a usable knife. Blade finishing is just as important as blade starting. Just my opinion of course. Hand sanding post heat treat is good practice.

Very good point. I just don't want to finish crap. I can Polish a turd till it shines but at the end of the day it's still a turd :D

Line the center of the drive and tracking wheel up with the CENTER of the platen wheels. I lined up the outside edge at first and it didn't track for crap. The tracking and drive wheel are a little wider than you platen wheels I'm betting.

I think that Camo color handle looks great!

nice job, The camo pattern can be difficult. I did this one a long time ago. The texture on the scales camo out ok I think.

Thanks for the tips on the grinder Kevin. I got it worked out, I had to move the motor a bit to the left... the problem is the tracking wheel is out of alignment with the platen wheels and the drive wheel. It's all square, but the tracking wheel sticks out too far. Oh well, it works, tracks to both sides of the platen and doesn't rub or wobble! What can I complain about? Now to the grinding!!!

Ya I think I had something more like yours in mind. I seem to be the only one that doesn't like it though so maybe I'm weird. I'm had sanding right now. I'll see how it turns out. I might try to add some contour somehow. Very nice knife by the way. I really like that.
