Don't have a video on this, but it's a simple "sled" which keeps a constant angle for cutting off the work table at the belt. It let's you maintain pressure & holds things pretty well in place, so the cut can be done easily. As with all hand-held tools, operator error is still the main problem. The fence is actually too tall & I may decide to cut it down a bit, but for now I'm just getting started with grinding, so every little bit helps. I used what I found at my local supplier (IMS), so it's a bit on the thick side & heavy, but it functions as a good heat-sink on the 1st side of the blade. Here's a shot after the 1st pass on the grinder with a coarse belt. Like I said, training wheels......

Hey guys, first time posting here. Here is my first kitchen knife (second knife ever, 1st knife from my shop without my teachers help) and wa style handle. 5.5" Petty knife ground from .135" 52100 heat treated to 62 by Peters. .008" at the choil and .005" everyone else along the edge as I found thinning the choil area was difficult for me without getting an over grind in the middle of the blade. Full flat grind with slight convex added in using a soft platen liner. I watched Mr. Harners sweeping plunge video on youtube 5 or 6 times before grinding this. Rounded spine and choil. First attempt at a belt finish, my first knife was hand rubbed. Handle is African blackwood, aluminum, Osage put together with the dowel method, tang hole filed out with needle files and tang burnt in, will be epoxying in tonight. Handle hand sanded with 1 coat of Tung oil finish on the Osage only and buffed by hand for quite a while with denim, will probably wax it tonight. No logo yet as I don't have one or an etcher, knife has yet to be sharpened (it will go to the wet stones after handle install). Thanks for looking.

Well here she is. By far not the nicest knife on the forum but I feel it's a really good representation of where I'm at skill wise. My goal was to push myself on this one and basically the entire knife was made of firsts for me. I'm really proud of this one.

Josh, excellent job on the finish. I have to say, I'm not too crazy about mirror finishes on knife blades. But that's going to be a nice looking knife. Just starting out I can appreciate how much work went into it to get that finish. I can barely get my grind marks straight. And when I do I somehow scratch the blade, and mess it up. Well done.

Thank you I appreciate that. I wouldn't consider it a mirror finish. It's 1000 grit on the bevels and 2000 on the flats. It took me forever but mainly because I'm not good at hand finishes yet.

new shop addition- i must have watched the bob loveless video too many times and developed drill press envy :D they are cheapies but save much time. i use lots of loveless bolts, no more setting table heights for different holding fixtures, changing bit sizes and countersinks or depth stops. one for the bolt holes, one for the thong tube, and one for the countersink.

2250? You're such a hifi weenie, John. :D

...have to add, I've got that beat for rarity - shitty old H.H. Scott solid state Model 357 here. :p

Nice work Trey, that looks pretty darn good regardless of number done.

Just made a sheath for "Blue Christmas". Only the second one I've done. It takes longer than a Kydex, but since it's something different, I enjoy it more (for now anyway).
