Bout done with my knive vise. Just need to make a few cuts tomorrow at a friends house with his torch, weld on the clamp, make a threaded rod with t-handle and the vise jaws. 3 direction rotation plus height adjustable.

i like that it is portable, good idea.
i'm going to get a vise stand and put my knife vise off the backside

Thanks.

Just make sure it's heavy. I actually lagged it to the floor. Just 2 layers of plywood on dirt right now. I'm going to add some more weight to this. Think I'm going set it on a piece of thin tin I have and make a 4" hoop from tin to make a form and pour concrete in it then remove the tin. I also brased off the upright with some 1/4" X 12" rods I have to take some spring our of it. The clutch springs even though welded were still flexing. Much better now.

Be nice to your mother in law, you never know what she's hiding in her basement! Mine just gave me this pile of wood that includes lacewood, a cherry burl, birdseye maple, and whatever the red and purple wood is.

Digging this up a bit, but the orange wood looks like Paduak, and the purple is indeed purpleheart. Looks like wood from woodcraft. Nice score bud!

Finally! The greatest of Christmas gifts (even if i had to buy it myself). My new grinder has arrived.

It's a sturdy piece, runs completely true. A very smooth ABB motor 3 HP with a IP66 inverter.

Solid steel tooling arms. Small wheels, 6 inch, 8 inch, 10 inch, flat platen and slack.

I'm getting another one with horizontal option for easier use with small wheels.

Merry Christmas to you all!

Congratulations currenthill, nice looking grinder!

A couple things going on in my shop:

I recently finished an 8" gyuto with 416 bolsters and desert ironwood scales.
62 aeb-l. I learned some things on this one.
First time I've used bolsters on a knife and first time I've made a saya.
These were taken before I finished the ironwood. It looks really good buffed.

I've been wanting to learn how to weld for a while now, watching YouTube videos and reading.
I started last night and made a surface grinder belt conversion.

I still have to test it today.

In these days, I'm working on this Hide Out knife with tiger coral handle

Good looking machine! Is it a local one?

I like your knife and your conversion Josh. Nice work! I've been wanting to put a stainless or silver bolster on an octo Gyuto. You are inspiring me. :)

My eye is drawn to your dust collector. Can you post a couple of photos of that?
Thanks

Thanks Brock! Even knowing that I needed to taper the pin hole and use the same material for the pins, they were still visible. This is something I need to practice more. I peened it a little late and I'm pretty sure I didn't polish the pin high enough prior to using it. Live and learn I guess.

It's nothing special, I put two ash vacuums below my grinder. One for wood/micarta and one for metal. I operate them manually with two switches. The metal vacuum has some water in the bottom to put out really hot metal, for example when hogging out profiles.

There are probably more efficient solutions, but I think it's working okay. It's for catching the dust closest to the grinder. I also have a ceiling mounted dust filter.

Finally working with some of the W2 I've been sitting on after making a few 1075 and 1095 knives with hamon. Not sure what this style knife would be called. It's from a free template on one of the various sites.
