What's going on in your shop? Show us whats going on, and talk a bit about your work!

First batch of this style is finally coming together. These were done on the 1x30 HF grinder, not so good on the finish really, a bit bumpy. The next batch is much better with the 2x72, night & day difference, easier sanding. Still making progress, but slowly. Need to design a couple of sheaths next, & thinking just a pocket sheath for the small blade. They're .098" AEB-L at 61 from Paul Bos, 5 7/8" for the small one & 7 1/2" LOA on the bigger one. This is a first attempt at a stainless steel & I'm liking it.

The larger blade is black canvas micarta, small one is ebony on this pair. My waterjet guy gets the first larger one (with the micarta) as a thank you gift. He's been really good about transferring my patterns into finished blanks for me, since I don't have a metal saw to use. It's been less than a year since I started on this journey, but I'm really enjoying it now. There's always so much to learn!

sending these off today to be HT-ed
Those clowdy shapes on the 3rd blade is reflection.

The top one is a bit of an experiment, it will be a 3 finger fixed blade front pocket knife I'll be edc-ing to test the concept

Hi all,

Brand new guy here. I don't have much to show, but I'm slowly getting going. Currently using an angle grinder, cheapo 1x30, files, and building up my tools and techniques as I go. My very first solo attempt went okay, but I abandoned it as an official knife end product and am treating it more for practice than anything. My current attempt is in progress. I design on my computer and ran through many iterations before settling on a basic, narrow drop-point hunter with OAL of about 7 3/4" in 3/16" O1. I didn't have a whole lot of time this weekend but was able to get my template made, lines laid out, and rough shaping done on one of the five I intend to do at once (primarily for practice at each step). I really like the hand feel already on this one at this stage. Planning to keep at least the first few dead simple with no bolster, but envision an upscale version I might attempt on the fifth with brass bolsters and liners and filework on the spine. We'll see.

I'm pretty nervous about the bevels, as I do not have a ton of practice or skill. My very first attempt was using a filing jig that went reasonably well, then I acquired the 1x30 and the edge refinement went... less well. I almost went down the path of some kind of mechanical forced-angle clamping jig but decided I really wanted to develop my freehand skill and that it would be ultimately limiting to go that way. Instead I went with the bubble jig system (an aside, Mr. Rowe has this down pat... I ordered one and it showed up at my door in like 2 days) figuring it can give me some confidence that I'm at or near an appropriate angle for my intentions without mechanically limiting me in any way. That way I can hopefully start developing the feel for the belt while still having a chance at producing something beautiful. We'll see!

Anyhow, here's the very beginnings.

Welcome aboard. Great looking start. I was right where you are at just over a year ago and am finishing my 8th knife right now and it has bolsters front and back. Good idea starting easy and working toward more comprehensive designs. Getting a feel for my tools and metal was good for me on the first ones and I am working my way to doing harder and harder processes so I cam make more elaborate designed knives. I have a whole new outlook an making during this latest one I'm working on finishing now, and it's for the better. the best word of advise I can give you is don't rush it. If you think you are about to mess up stop step back and assess the situation. If you do mess up look at where you went wrong and use it as a tool to find the right way. You can always take more metal off, you can't put it back on. having started with a 1x30 myself just take your time grinding the bevels. It's not going to go quick, and at this point wouldn't recommend trying to. It served me well. Even now that I have a 2x72 I still grind my bevels probably slower than most.

Thoes are really attractive, nicly done. Whats your blade finish?
Thank you JT, these are at 600 grit. :)

* Says prayers to hit the KITH lottery, so I can actually see one of Josh's knives in person *

Really, You are my prime example for awesome multiple material handles.

Haha I'm feeling the same way about the KITH, wish I could get to see all of them. Lots of good looking stuff from talented makers. I appreciate the kind words Kevin. :D

Blessings,
Joshua

Are you doing that with a disk? I'm curious how you get that unique arcing plunge line.

I always look forward to your IG updates. You do some of the most consistent, clean work I've seen! And a lot of it!

I started a little WIP on my instagram. These are my "dove-wa" style handles for a pair of kitchen knives. A 9.5" blade gyuto and a Honesuki. W2 Steel.
The handles have black wood frames and honduran rosewood scales i book matched from a block. I am excited to finish these....the project was started over a year ago

Looking good
I don't know if it was one bar you cut those out of but if scratch your first outline, then flip over the template, you can move them closer together, saving steel (if you understand what I mean)

Timos, those dove tailed scales look facinating! I'd love to see them finnished

Finally got the nerve to grind my first tapered tang tonight. I'm not sure if my process was correct but everything came out right so that's a good sign. Still a little confused on drilling the pin holes in my handle material but I'll figure it out when I get that far.

Looking good Josh. Check out this thread for drilling the scales. http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/957934-How-do-you-drill-scales-for-a-tapered-tang-Pics-of-finished-knife-added

Thank you John, really appreciate that. These are all done on a flat platen. Getting sweeping plunges is something I am still working at.
Latest one done, pleased with the end result. :)
