A lot of beautiful finished pro stuff here in the thread, so I'll share some amateur WIP :) Shaping a black linen micarta handle. At 60 grit. Plan is 1500 then buffing with one, maybe two, compounds.
Do you guys draw out your handle contours, or just shape freehand? I'm just freehanding this. Xmas/bday gift for the mother in law.

scaniaman, i draw them on the spine edge of the handle material. then i use calipers to make sure each side is the same thickness at the front, middle hump, rear scoop and pommel.

Yes, that is more exact for sure and I probably will do something like that the next time. I think the reason for freehanding here is a bit of laziness.. Drawing it up like that is probably more time efficent as well. With freehanding there is a lot of looking, adjusting, looking and adjusting..

new guy here! (no relation to phantom knife company)
i'v recently got my forge back out and started working again and this is no.6, I believe the knife it was based on is called a promaja.
I had some issues with a stubborn wave in the edge and it seemed no matter what i did it would just get worse, anyone here have a clever solution that doesnt involve a vice? i havent mounted mine yet.

Bought some cherry burl from a local guy who harvests it here in southern MN. Finally got a chance to cut it down to blocks suitable for stabilization. Must do some dyed red - but from what I have seen so far, I think the contrast dark colors give works well - maybe also some as royal blue and also brown? (WEO earlier mentioned black - not sure how that would work with burl, though I think it is a great idea for spalted woods.....)

I have purchased some Maple burl scales that were stabilized & dyed with black and it came out excellent! You could see the red, Brown to white specks in the burl with a Milky Way type swirl pattern as it darkened. The knife sold to the first person to pick it up! Of course I lost the pics of it.,,I will do it myself when I send in a batch to K&G. Thy it on a few blocks!

I've tried so many times to make a slipjoint. I finally made it. Thanks to Stang Bladeworks Stang Bladeworks tutorial, @AVigil instagram posts and several youtube videos.
Alternative ivory (deliberately cracked..not.. to look like real ivory), red G10 liner, copper pins, 52100 carbon steel, acid etched/stone tumbled.

The pattern is from Stang Bladeworks and his tutorial at blade forums.
