What's going on in your shop? Show us whats going on, and talk a bit about your work!

A few knives that are done and just need sharpened. I only have three more sheaths to finish before these are available. The photo is poor.

Here's some grinding belts that I received from Trugrit recentlIMG_6663_1280.jpg

DellisI'd love to see how you do the finish to!man that's lovely! what are the handle materials on those two?

The finish on the blade is real easy.........explained above, but maybe I will put together a tutorial when I get the time.

The hunter handle is cocobolo, with nickel silver bolster........thru tang construction.
Bowie/fighter is maroon linen micarta with black canvas micarta frame and red liners.

DEllis how do you get the the forged look on the guard and blade?

The forged look on the blade flats is forged in:D I do use a texturing hammer for some of that effect. The fittings are roughed up with a dremel burr, and then blued and lightly sanded/polished .

Thanks,
Darcy

Here are a couple shots of progress so far. I got the pin installed and domed.... Still some work to be done.

Sorry for the lousy photography...I was trying to show this clay less hamon

Michael- Great looking group of knives! :)

Adam- NICE!!!

So a guy can talk about his own work until he's blue in the face and get no where.... But if you build friendships with folks that can positively influence your work and also explain and demonstrate it... well, IMHO, that is truly worth something.  You guys have heard me mention "the Joe Paranee project" in my recent videos... well, here is Joe! Explaining the what, why, how of our project (which is definitely what is on my workbenches right now!!! ;) :D).

:) :) :)

Here's the no music version for those of you that don't like it. ;)

This is a WIP I am making for my Dad for Father's day. It will be my first handmade knife.
1095 HC with a flat grind, Maple burl Dyed Green Scales with a mosaic lanyard tube.

This is just a fit test. I have some blade surface finishing to do before I add the scales.
Hope to be done with it this weekend.

Thanks for looking.

Adam- NICE!!!

Thanks Nick....

I used your vinegar and Lemon juice technique. Worked great!

I love that Paranee Bowie....I thought he was going to jump out of his tight pants he was so giddy about it...but then again I think anyone would be :)

Nice work guys!

I have been busy... really busy! Here's a sample of what is going on in the shop. I also took some pics of my blaster setup for you guys to see, it works pretty well. I'm running 80 grit garnet.

An endless amount of blades? Sure looks like it! :D

I've been working on these friction folders like crazy... they are getting closer!

Here's another glance at the .360" Chopper batch. Competition Chopper at the bottom :D

Compressor - mine has been down and it is good to be back up and blasting!

Blast Cab Setup - notice the drops, valves, air dryer, regulator/gauge, exhaust vac, and Made in USA barrel blast cab!

This is where I have been spending a lot of time lately. :D

These are looking beautiful! I have a lot of time into this stack...

Covered in white grease... the grease works great but is not getting used again! well, maybe for long term storage

Erik- That's gorgeous!

Daniel- You must run on IV adderall or something... damn! :D

I really appreciate you posting the pics of the sandblast set-up, I haven't ordered the Barrel Blaster yet because I got overwhelmed shopping for a compressor. I almost pulled the trigger on a 2 stage Quincy the other day, but a $1500 compressor for occasional blasting and a couple dropped air lines seems excessive. If that HD compressor is pulling its weight for you and all that blasting, it would be plenty for me! Thanks Daniel! :)

BTW- what was the white grease on the big sucker for? Was is just for rust protection? On polished/clay hardened blades that have to sit for awhile (here in the Pacific North Wet...er, um.. West) I coat them like that. It's a PITA to get it off, but not nearly as much as doing the etching & polishing all over again! :grumpy: :)

Joe,
Very well done description of the attributes of Nicks Combat Bowie.

I would like to add for any of the new makers that in my design experiences and use these design features of the handle, Wide hips, Palm swell and index flats at the guard are also important features for use in large camp & Hunting choppers.

Nick, The strumming minstrel music is great!

Thanks Nick! :D I'm highly motivated to make it.

The blast setup works well but if I had to do it again I'd possibly consider a different compressor. I'm looking into a Max-Air unit. I'd say for most of us the one I have will do the job well.

I recently had some issues getting a part for it but it was resolved, after a huge wait I got a whole new unit! It is nice to have now but I am playing a lot of catch up at the moment. I'm on the fence about it. :D It's no big deal here but I am somewhat hesitant to recommend it after that. Overall it is a good compressor.

I sprayed on that white grease for long term rust protection while the compressor was down. I like to blast the tangs and scales before glue-up and have a stack of fixed blades just waiting. :D I was trying to wipe it off and later tried spraying on some generic wd-40, it wiped right off. I do think I'll use it again, the knives were as clean as can be.

By the way the Barrel Blaster is great, I really like it. A bigger dust collector is in store though, that little shop vac can't hang! I need a stool to sit on or maybe need to raise the blast unit, I'm about 5'9" and it is at an awkward height. I'd get ceramic nozzles too, they last much longer than the metal ones.

I'm really enjoying the pics and progress, I might have to get a forge!

Awesome work all around everyone!

soon as i can load a video right i ll post it up but i got the integral all finished up short of honing the blade
