What's going on in your shop? Show us whats going on, and talk a bit about your work!

I'm lucky enough to live in the same town as Bob Kramer, of Kramer Knives. I was at his shop today and brought him a piece of MagnaCut since he hasn't had the chance to work with it just yet.

In return, he's having me come over next week and we're going to build a chef knife together. I'm pretty dang excited.

So... Nothing going on in my shop per se, but close enough. :D
How are things in Bellingham? Wish I never left.

Pretty awesome up here (aside from the housing market, lol). We came up here for school almost fifteen years ago and just couldn't bring ourselves to leave.

I bought this is a bare wood kit. Had to glue the neck and do a little carpentry to get it to sit properly. Stained and varnished the top. Varnish is Tru Oil. Have a video on how I did it on YT. The body is mahogany so had to fill the pores and then used Tung Oil to seal it. Just waiting on some wiring so I can get the electronics, pickups and switches installed.

Made in West Germany .......M2 Steel  Now you will see what look like to grind real steel ...........after you grind one , AEBL will look to you like wood 🙂
Watch this .................it is M35 but edge retention in knife should be same with M2
Thanks, will give that a look, I am (not) looking forward to it. Before I take bigger bites I might try a small pairing knife. I will hardness test it for fun. Any point in tempering it down?

Finally finished this fishing knife for a friend. another one made from a blank (410 SS), with handle of a mystery wood bought from the grab-box at Woodcraft. First time trying Horsewrights approach to basket weave stamping on leather. The sheath has a number of problems (which I wont go in to...), but this was the first time I produced what I thought was a reasonable basket weave (thank you again Horsewright for your teachings!).. My friend is going fishing with family next week .... so I need to get this in to his hands!

Cushing, caution your friend that when putting the knife in that sheath, don't hold it by the bottom half. The tip on that style can easily catch the leather inside and go through the side and into your hand before you even know it. Some folks make a thin aluminum liner that fits inside the sheath to prevent this.

Thanks Stacy... will do. I have been concerned about the way the knife inserts into the sheath, by you explain it better. I’ll talk it through with him... and likely remake the sheath to get away from the quiver style... or consider a liner as you suggest.

I've been enjoying my new Brodbeck Ironworks grinder. I have been using a Craftsman 2x42 for the past 6 years so I'm excited about all the possibilities with this bad boy! This was my first time shaping handles with a small wheel attachment and also my biggest batch of chef knives. Very happy with how little work it leaves to hand finishing with files and sandpaper.

Just got back from Bob Kramer's. I learned a lot! We only had a few hours today, so I'll be going back a couple more times to finish the knives. Today we worked on two seven inch chef knives out of MagnaCut steel.

After scribing, cutting with the bandsaw, and cleaning up with the belt sander. Today was my first time using a metal cutting bandsaw since high school and my first time using a 2" x 72" belt sander. Heck, it was my very first time using a scribe, lol. I have a LOT to learn.

I wish I could have gotten more contrast with the hamon... I think I went too far on the etching. Took me 5 or 6 tries before I got something I was happy with. I didn’t take the metal to completely clean in between etches so that might have affected it too. Irdk
Overall I think it’s super cool, and sharp... it will slice tissue paper.
Oh and the steaks on the blade is from chopping up a pineapple... couldn’t resist.
