I set up a nice anvil from a 60 lb piece of railroad track (I weighed it, not a guess). Did my first real forging session today with some rebar to make some tongs. Not done yet but turning out okay for my first hammering experience. I stripped the varnish off of the handle of my harbor freight cross pein hammer but it still left a blister on my hand right before my pointer finger.
Veteran smiths of bladeforums, is the blister from a bad handle shape, improper grip, or simply a first time forging callus?
Alright...had a little basement flooding issue when the power was out this morning, but we're squared away now. Got the enamel laid in...looking pretty sweet![]()
Yes, baked in hard enamel.A baked in hard enamel, or just paint ?
So if you don't have a sump pump running the basement gets wet ?
That's a poor way to build a house. You wonder how that gets approved.
I find a drop point with a large belly to be extremely versatile.A couple just in from Peters! Both are s60v! That big belly skinner Style is becoming a thing for me for sure!
I've heard great things about those grinders! Also I like the lines on the sgian dubh. I've had 2 of those in the works myself for probably a year but I just seem to keep bumping them down in priority. Gotta change that!Just got a grinder and forge.

The sgian dubh is 1095, not the best starter steel I know. I have a thermocouples, Rutland, and parks 50. Ground the tip too thin so I sort of expect it to not survive the quench but I don't have anything to lose and maybe it'll make it.

It looks great to me!S60V and kirinite! Nobody likes kirinite but me, the guys at work don't like it and other people around here don't like it much but I make knives however I want!View attachment 1706909View attachment 1706910View attachment 1706911
Yes it does look out of line depending on the angle, that's one of the reasons I quit using 3 pins. In the middle where the handle is thicker if you rotate it ,it seems to go above or below the line of the other two pins! Same with the lanyard tube!It looks great to me!
It could be the angle of the photo, but my eye questions the alignment of the mosaic pin, just a little.
I've got nothing against krinite.S60V and kirinite! Nobody likes kirinite but me, the guys at work don't like it and other people around here don't like it much but I make knives however I want!View attachment 1706909View attachment 1706910View attachment 1706911
Yes, sometimes I play around with the alignment. Actually on a line doesn't always look right, sometimes it seems better to follow a curved line with the flow of the overall shape.Yes it does look out of line depending on the angle, that's one of the reasons I quit using 3 pins.
