Working on getting my shop set up here in the south of France

It’s been on the slow going side
Got electrical and lighting put in and soon the sink
Furnace damaged in shipping and scrap now…
Grinder motor makes a noise now but should work ok
Cool benches, any chance you can claim the damage for the furnance?

I really have no idea, I just assume shipping carriers have some kind of responsibility for damaged goods.

in this case the furnace was crated, I'm not an expert in shipping furnaces and didnt realize the muffle plates would/could dislodge and break apart.
I didn't take any steps to insure the furnace was good to ship, I just assumed a crate was sufficient.
I assumed that because the item was crated it would be handled carefully.
I didn't consider that it would/could get thrown around and all the crates got thrown around.
I didn't buy insurance because the item was crated and I didn't want to declare the value as the EU is punishing with customs duty tax for items entering the region.

It was a bit of a cluster f*%k on my end in terms of shipping items at the very end of my departure of the USA.
I simply ran out of time and did the best I could
I spent about $4,000 shipping 4 crates and 8 boxes.

On the furnace, the deal is that is a $9,000 furnace new, my neighbor in Arizona gave it to me for $70. I got a couple years use out of it.
I could buy new muffle heater plates for $1,000 and shipping to France.

UPS might have some responsibility, I don't know. But I don't have the patience to go through their process.
I should have thought about it and researched the proper packing in shipping this furnace and I didn't.

Makes sense, especially for very thin material as this. I will not go below 1.5 mm anymore and this only for this small pairing knives. I dont like too much flex and all this bending problems and performance can be achieved with distal taper.
Why just for thin steel ? This two pieces are 4.5mm thick CPM S30V hardened on 62 Hrc .Straight as it can be straight . Now I need to decide which design the knives should be and continue with the work. There are even advantages to this method. There is no fear of cracking, warping of steel , hardness after HT protocol ......All I need to know is there before I start to work on steel . It's not very pleasant when after so much effort to finish the knife, something happens during hardening and the knife ends up in the trash...............I am right ?

I'm guessing you use a carbine bit for the pin holes?

Yes , drill bits for ceramic and glass drill hole in hardened steel /no matter how hard and which steel / like in wood .To bad that I can t find them under 4mm size . For smaller hole I steal / OK , I borrow , but I never return since they break easily / some real carbide drill bits from my friend shop ;)
PS . When they break some of them around the tip, they throw them away. I can sharpen them again..so :)
I get this one some day ago . I sharpen some of them for scribe lines on steel .

I have had that happen.
The dented shroud was hitting the fan.
Removing the 3 screws and the shroud, banging out the dent solved that.

Doesnt grinding thicker profiles from hardened steel kill your belts or take long if you use old belts and need to cool in between?

Come on Fredy , it takes five minute to cut and shape knife , crank that belt speed on maximum ! This is 64 HRC 5 mm M2 HSS steel ,easy work for me .It s me or my Klingspor belts are something special i don t know for now .

As long as it works for you! Makes sense if you are using hardened steel. I have some 2.5mm m2 straight saw blades i want to try for kitchen knives. When i start with bars i lay the blanks for saving material, like tang to tang.

If that works for me should work for everyone . Much easier, much faster and 100% safe way to make knife . What is the difference between using an ordinary HSS drill to drill hole in soft steel and to drill hole in hardened steel with carbide drill bit ?
Never mind , as you say ........................as long as it work for me ;)
