I’ve been using that Takefu Suminagashi since 2016, still one of my favorite forging steels. The core steel pattern tells me it Looks like you used a press?
I did, I drew it out with round dies in the press before flattening it. This was the first time working with it but I wanted to get some movement to the straight lines to closer resemble Suminagashi. I’ll definitely be getting more, do you know of a vendor that carry’s it in more than one size?

Workshop heaven or dictum
I believe it only comes in the one size bar

I’ve found the steel can be a little chippy so I switched to oil quench from my previous water quench. So I don’t recommend that much core exposure as you have it.

It’s a great forging steel

This was oil quenched, I’ve got 2 small blades I can use one to test edge stability. Currently the one that’s polished is at 64hrc and the customer will be made aware it’s a fine slicing knife or I’ll temper it down some more if the edge stability doesn’t hold up the way I’d like on one of the smaller blades. I appreciate the feedback and can definitely try some things differently on the next bar.

made a little gadget for the grinder last night and used it today, so far so good

Hitachi Suminagashi (Dictum or Workshop Heaven) is one of my favorite steels. Looks wonderful and takes a very wicked edge. HT for the core steel.

Looks good. Do you use it for bevels, and if so, does it yield a nice grind line?
yeah, pretty not too bad. The bevels were pretty much done against the glass but the knives I'm working on are slightly convex so the leather seems to blend things together pretty nicely without washing out the transition line. I tried gluing a piece of leather to the platen first, and that was a horrible idea- removing the leather and glue had me shaking my fist at the sky in rage. But I'm much better now :)

I like it. I use double sided tape when I try out the leather platen. Might cut a fresh piece and give it another go.

the cool thing about this system is that all I have to do is loosen the platen fasteners and hang the leather cover from the top. Super fast and easy to put on and take off. Used it for a couple hours of grinding today and it's holding up pretty good

Dang!!! Is that a machine finish?

got the slabs mostly flat enough, gonna have to add another shim having made a slight miscalculation but it shouldn't be too hard to fix. Note to self; never, ever ASSUME that the handle material is FLAT. Pins are set and precise, so it was a productive night I'd say

Tell us more about the handle materials!

^it's all G10, nothing too exciting. A knife maker acquaintance of mine sent me a little box of samples from Jantz he had lying around. I'm guessing they were used for samples since they were all a little warped. Except for the brass/carbon fiber stuff, which is flat but terrible to work with. Not sure what any of this stuff is going to look like, but the green has little bits of brass or something in it, so I think it'll look pretty neat after a good polishing
