What's going on in your shop? Show us whats going on, and talk a bit about your work!

im kinda a noob at this...

but whats the liquid nitrogen for? I've heard about dipping the knives for treating them in some way?

Its explained here in a lot more detail than anyone here will be able to (or at least willing to) fit into a reply. Above me is pretty much the explanation though. You're not getting all the austenite to transform to martensite. Usually with those steels you can temper in the secondary hardening range, but that will have other effects that might not be desirable, like not being as tough, or not being as stainless.

yeah it's part of the quenching process which makes your steel harder

Very Nice! What brand do you prefer for the higher carbide steels? I was taking everything to a high finish pre-HT then taking them bck to hand sanded 600 or above grit, but it would be nice to take the edges to a thinner cross section post HT.

Sorry, I missed this before!
Thanks!
I ground everything post HT. Deerfos Bora7, just goes through everything and is at least half the price of 3M cubitron. I use it for virtually all my grinding up to P120.
In the end I also added P220 Bora-3 ceramic before going red Scotchbrite.

Another excellent belt is Deerfos PS999. It is designed for lower pressure grinding. I use it on a felt backed platen when doing convex grinds, P120.

Thanks bud. Looking forward to getting my shop set back up, after my household goods are delivered...

Another experiment engraving bolsters with the laser, I call this one Digital Streaks.
Bare eyed you have to pay attention to see the semitone pattern, its notieceable but on the second look, and I like this.

Interesting.
What difference do you notice with the PS999? How is it different with low pressure?
And where do you get them?

It requires less pressure than Bora-7 to remove material, hence less heat too. The pressure difference gets very obvious when grinding on felt, where Bora-7 is not very useful at all.

Enigma24 and Truhlarime have them

I forged the blade as a test for a larger cai dao, but it came out quite nice. So I stuck a block of wood that I screwed up with another project on as a handle, and ended up with this nice little cai dao / nakiri thing.
Blade is 5160, handle is stabilised Tasmanian blackwood, copper pin.

That’s a beast, nice!

Testing today. I made a brush pile and chopped halfway through a 2”x4”. I wanted to put one through its paces to see how it held up. Overall length of this knife is a little under 10.25”. It’s a flat grind sharpened to 15 dps. I got a few chips towards the tip where I hit the ground a few times cutting down the locust saplings. We have very stony soil here so not surprised it took a few dings but other than that it would still take off arm hair and glide through printer paper.597BFC9C-0C04-4EFB-A1A8-913D6F8A9DC7.jpeg

Second (and final) knife out of that scrap cumai a friend gave me. Greenberg Woods Greenberg Woods sells some truly kick ass Siamese rosewood. I have had some problems with damascus shields. I haven't quite worked out the correct ordering of: cutting shield, cutting pocket, heat treating shield (needed to do that to get it to etch well), etching shield. The result was kind of gappy, but it was the last of the steel, so I'll just live with it.

just finished my evening tv allotment and headin over to the grinder to get some grinding done. Pretty excited about the folder blade, it's fun watching the primary bevel form

SHIT! So sorry about the huge pictures, Imgur isn't letting me edit them for some reason. I suspect it's a conspiracy 🤔
