Well, I haven't made a single knife this summer, but I have been working on gathering funds and transforming my garage into a workshop. I just finished my third workbench for the garage and have my electrician coming out Saturday to completely overhaul the garage with a separate fuse box, 220 lines for my brand new Esteem Grinder and provide much needed lighting.

Just bought a house recently and am setting up a new workbench in the garage.

2x8 top added:

Top piece of sanded plywood and some edging added.

Put some danish oil on the top last night and will be installing drawers and shelves this weekend as well as some of my equipment. I'm sure she won't stay pretty for long.

This is the latest off my bench. I've been trying lately to get my hamons down lower towards the edge, about 1/3 or less. I'd like this one a bit lower, otherwise I'm a happy with this piece. Mark's stabilized Redwood burl and Rosewood(liners and bolsters).

There's just something about your eye for design, every knife you make really shouts your style and the workmanship is fantastic. I will own one of your knives one day, keep up the great work!

Peter, that knife is a fusion of east-west!!! both the knife and sheat are top notch!!!
Your pieces are never boring, and the sheats make for great packages!!!

Been saving up for a buffer, and did this for the meantime. Got some parts and bolted it to the disk sander.

Two days later, my Leeson motor on the kmg takes a dump

Erik, i like your integral filing guide... how do you manage to set the knife square for filing?

^ Great work all around everyone!

I've been working on these RF2 Framelocks like a freakin' maniac! :emot-yarr:

Those are super awesome Daniel, I'm hoping to start my first folders soon.

Kosa, thanks for the compliment. I worked really hard on the shop. It took me over a month and three tries to get it to where it is now.

Is that a 1-1.5 car garage? Just curious how much room I will need when I move next if a shop isn't available.

I'm working out of exactly half of a 2 car, so a 1 car garage basically. The back of the one row of benches sits right on the expansion joint that divides the slab down the middle of the garage.

This was my third attempt at a setup. I can say for sure in a space this small, the only way I've found it to be completely usable for me, is to set up as a single aisle down the middle.

I tried a couple other setups, with an island, or with a tee, so that there were separate grinding and machining areas, and it was absolutely terrible. The first setup I had was so bad, I couldn't even step foot in my shop, without getting injured just trying to move around... let alone try to do even the simplest task. I still have unhealed cuts and bruises on my elbows and ankles, from 2-3 weeks ago.

This is just a temporary measure, but I'm not sure what the timeline is on a "real" shop, so I needed to make sure it was as usable as possible. So far, with the limited work I've been able to do in it, I can say that although far from roomy, a single car space is definitely enough, as long as you don't have any full size machine equipment.

Start talking Bridgeport, surface grinder, etc., and I'd say 2-car minimum.

People sometimes bag on the mini-mills and lathes, but I purchased them specifically because I didn't know where I would be landing in the end. I'm really happy I made that decision, because anything else just wouldn't work in the space I currently have available. Good dust collection and as much as you can on casters/wheels, is also pretty important IMO.

Ok great. I was banking on a minimum of a two car for space. Luckily the wife doesn't care if I take the whole garage if the house doesn't have a shop on site. How well does that mini mill work? Looks like a grizzly?
