Thnx. So you only scratch trough the paint with the bit and etch to get dept in to the steel?

I have a Deckel pantograph and I tried all saturday to get engraving like yours.
I tried with and without power and broke the tips of all my bits. I think I used the worng bits, I'll see if I can get yours with the shank diameter I need.
I used sharp engraving bits like these.

The tip on the bit I am using is diamond. It is inlayed into the bottom of the bit. So the diamond does scratch into hardened steel. It can be seen but there is no darkness to it. the darkness comes from going through the electro etch process just as if you have a stencil.

So I get a combination of actually scratching into the steel and some additional depth and color from the electro etch procedure.

Here is the old video I followed:

Thnx I've watched the vid and ordered new bits.
I used solid carbide Saturday but they shattered.
Good to know that it can be done post HT. I'll send everything off and have some fun experimenting when it comes back from HT. No etch, electro, acid, actually looking forwards to trying it all out.
Do those bits last?

A diamond drag tip will last for decades if you don't chip or break it accidentally in use. The carbide cutters are for soft materials and last a long time doing plastic and wood, but won't survive trying to cut metal.

I've worked some meteorite into a few solid bars I am going to try and see if carbon can be added similar to the method of making blister steel.
and I am finishing up the twin to the knife below for my father.aletai meteorite on the back and 1095 on the edge. 3 1/4 - 3 1/2 inch blade and 3 1/2 - 3 3/4 inch handle somewhere around 7 inch total

man, I finally got serious today and went through all my belts. A couple of years of belt hoarding- at least half of them went into the garbage. Dozens. It actually felt pretty good, although during the sorting process I did feel tinges of regret wasting some of those belts due to my lack of experience, but then I realized I learned a lot by using all these different belts and will end up saving myself time and money by bulking up on only the belts that I now know give me the results I want.

nothing glamorous today, but another step in the right direction. Putting together a belt order is always kind of fun!

I always clean out my belts when i do a big belt order.

And yeah, it does kinda hurt letting go of my precious abrasives. But being realistic with myself. They would just collect dust if i didnt toss them.

Dave, when I first saw those handle slabs you made two things came to mind:
1. Looks a bit like the Union Jack ( this bottom photo of slabs together)
2. You must have a lot if free time on your hands😂

Looks fantastic sir! Since I purchased one of the Empire Knives. I’ll start clearing a spot on my mantle to display this fine blade, when I’m announced as the winner.
