Hey Glen, what's your process on the vertical belt finish? Your work gets cleaner on each knife!!
Thank you! I use worn 120 and 150 grit belts on my 1x30 grinder on the slowest setting, then I follow up with a surface conditioning belt. It takes a little time, but the end result is worth the effort.

Here’s a drop point hunter I made a while back.

I managed to finish a blade blank that I bought more than 10 years ago - it is a German kitchen knife, made with some unknown (to me) carbon steel - if anyone has more clue about what kind of steel this could be please let me know. the blade is more than 10 inches long, this is a big boy.

I thinned out the grind quite a bit, it is a nice slicer now. Very rustic handle with that weird collar or groove thing there to preserve authenticity.

Thanks Stacy I think I did hit it a bit too hard. I have a spinner that I should have used. But here is the finished product. I need to learn the bolsters finishing better.
Bone is sometimes very brittle. Peen the rivets just barely. One smack too hard or too many times and the bone cracks. Ivory and mammoth can be worse, and MOP is insanely brittle.

getting back to this kitchen knife. My hand sanding situation is greatly improved with my new vise. I discovered a handy way to keep my work in position without having to worry about stabbing myself in between sessions

Haven't worked with much carbon fiber lately...I forgot how much I hate working with it. I itch now.

Heh, Kevlar is worse! I am usually OK with carbon fiber, but the kevlar stuff I used for guards was horrible!

Water is your friend with CF. Rubber gloves and a good grade respirator are a must. Mist system set to almost a full spray helps. Clean and vacuum everything in tre grinder and sanding area immediately. Vac off and shake out your clothes.
All that will help, but you will still probably itch the next day.

Oh, BTW, I HATE CF.
