Here’s a carving knife I’m finishing up. The blade is AEBL with iron wood scales, red liners, and brass hardware.

My carbide platen has led to plenty of issues on the way to better quality. Multiple little things have become apparent that I probably missed before because even my ht A2 platten seemed to quickly change shape.
What do you have on your grinding fixture there? Does it prevent scratches on the flats? I've never been able to get past that issue using a fixture like that

It is a piece of g10 that I used as a repair because I stupid and ruined my original guide. It does seem like less stuff sticks to the g10.

I use to keep the ht patina on the flats so would use a layer of blue tape to protect tje flats from scratches and it worked decently well.

Oof...that is one drawback of stainless/tool steels! I have 6 blades to wrap in foil; they are around 24" OAL EACH and 2" wide....not looking forward to that!

I have started using the Nu Clayer products on larger knives to save foil.

I run my Magnacut at 2150, so I need something that can hold up at those temperatures. Most of the coatings are OK to around 2000 or so from what I have seen. The No Scale 2000 had decarb present on the 52100 and AEB-L coupons. Not sure if it was a bad batch or the application wasn't right or something? He was dipping/brushing instead of spraying on, so that can affect the results! I have been trying to see if anyone comments with better results from the No Scale or other coatings.

The Turco did pretty well on AEB-L, not sure of the temp limit. The ATP-641 is rated to 2300, so I may try some samples from cut off pieces on AEB-L and Magnacut to see how it does.

Larrin did some testing recently and preferred foil to the coatings for stainless: https://knifesteelnerds.com/2024/10/21/coatings-vs-foil-heat-treating-steel/ He mentioned in a FB post that the ATP-641 didn't do well with AEB-L, but maybe that was with scale prevention and not decarb? He found scale, but no decarb in the 52100 and AEB-L samples he did with ATP-641.

Finished up a chef's utility knife for a friend of mine. I think this is the 13th knife I've made - the third one I've heat treated myself, and the second I ground without a jig. I was super excited about how smooth I was able to get the bevels until I went to put an edge on it. Still not getting thin enough behind the edge, and I'm still yet to master putting an edge on with the Tormek. overall I'm really happy with how it turned out. Sharpened to 20 deg inclusive and it's super sharp. 1084 with micarta scales and stainless pins.IMG_3627.jpeg

yoinked the whack lighting from our bathroom a couple years ago, but I kept it because I'm a hoarder lol. Wife thinks so anyway.
well, turns out it's the perfect fixture for my finishing area- no missing any scratches now!

Here's some blanks I have sitting on the workbench. I've gotten them cleaned up since this picture but thats about it. I need to go work some more on these but its to cold to do much work without a heated space :(
