I tried my hand at some new stuff on this handle and had an absolute blast! I had done some stippling like this on a sgian dubh a while back and thought I'd try something similar on a chef knife. I really dig it.

Really Neat.... Is that burn or grind, with a rotary?
My brother in law can't leave any Glocks left alone.... They kinda look similar, but I know that he poke and tickles them

Ground in with a burr on a Dremel. I'm not sure how well the burning would work on an oily hardwood like this. I know guys do that on their Glocks though, and I definitely got some inspiration from that direction.

Stunning job, Michael.

Thanks Stacy, I really appreciate it!

Also, I forgot to mention that I did an S grind on this one as well. The stone wash finish hides it pretty well, and it was with a 36" radius anyway, so it's less pronounced.

Finished my dad's hunting knife from a couple months back. Sent out for BOS heat treat since it is 154CM steel. First try at hand-filed jimping, which turned out a little too deep and a little uneven. Also put a minor hole in the edge bevel right as I was finishing up the primary bevel, which stinks, but it is a working knife. Dad will probably sharpen it out pretty quick. He is a little aggressive on the stones. I'll have to tell him to take it easy on the diamond plates. This is the thinnest grind I have done, and I like how it turned out. The scales turned out a little thick, but I had a hard enough time keeping them flat while thinning them on my 1x30. Still have yet to set up the OBM 2x72 since I have to align the motor and chasis myself. That should make things easier with the much longer and wider platen.

Been busy cleaning things up in the shop. Came across a bin of damascus and bars I had drawn patterns on to cut out ... so I cut them all out. About 50 blades.
Then, I was taking some stuff upstairs and was looking for some handle wood to send to a fellow forumite. I spotted the shelf where I put the best of the best. Most was from Bill Moran's shop. The planks on the wall are 4 feet long and 10/4 thick ... curly maple. The huge curly maple board in the photo is 5/4 thick and as good as it gets. There are five or six of those. Then I found my spalted persimmon pieces. Those are 12" to 16" round and 10-12" long. This stuff has been in a dry environment for between 50 (Bill's stuff) and 25 years (my stuff). I have a lot of cutting up to do to get them ready to send them to the stabilizer.
What I was working on in the shop was a batch of 50-caliber bottle openers and a few 50-cal brass gravers. I also made half-a-dozen gravers with stag handles ( no photo yet). There will be bronze gravers when I get them assembled.shop photos 3 .jpgshop photos 10 .jpgshop photos 6 .jpgshop photos 9 .jpgshop photos 8 .jpgshop photos 3 .jpgshop photos 10 .jpgshop photos 6 .jpgshop photos 9 .jpgshop photos 8 .jpgshop photos 2 .jpg20250816_150203.jpgshop photos 7 .jpg20250816_150203.jpgshop photos 8 .jpgshop photos.jpgshop photos 4 .jpg

Tried using Pops 400 grit felt back belts on Magnacut, did a great job!

2 more Magnacut FBBO with OD Green Canvas handles and orange pins and liners, stainless lanyard tube. With laser engraving too!

And worked on a 52100/rebar San Mai piece from Mike Kerley! 2 layers of rebar on each side, so it looks like go mai. I polished it up to 2000 by hand, acid etched and then used some 1200 grit AO powder, Wd 40 and a shop towel to polish the blade back again. It got an auto hamon, too!

Thinking of a black g10 guard and Afzelia xylay for the handle? May do a white/ivory color spacer between the guard and handle?

Got some good stuff from my buddy, Andy.
18" vibratory Tumbler .... never used.

30" propane wok/fryer for festivals, etc. No wok bowl (the guy wanted to keep it), but the burner base is unused. It sort of looks like a high-grade turkey fryer. So, Andy went out and scrounged up a 24" stainless two-handle pan for it. I am thinking of using this as the burner and base for my chip forge project in the future. In the mean time, it will work for a big pot of stew or chowder, or steaming crabs/oysters. My giant steamers and pots will fit on it.

Antique signs, license plates, tools, and construction supplies ... for free ... again,, Andy.

I saw a pile of 4'X6' Horse Stall matts outside Andy's dad's shop. Andy got them somewhere years ago and set them outside. His dad never drug them in (they probably weight 80# each). With his dad's stroke, he never will ... so we took them to my place. They now make the approach lane to my axe target.

At another friend of Andy's house are six 48"X108" X4" sections of a commercial freezer. They are set sideways as a 48" high fence. They are white epoxy clad, and solid as a rock, probably 14 gauge aluminum both sides over solid insulation. They lock together on the 9' side. They will become the floor in my new forge. The lady wants it gone so she can put up privacy fence. They will be a snap to unscrew from the 2X4 that holds them together and load on another friend's tow-truck.. Hopefully Tuesday.

I am working on about 50 throwing axes. One associated project is converting a 175-200-year-old broad axe with a worn through spot on the cheek (bad weld on the last fold of the wrought iron) into a bearded throwing axe. I started with cutting out a bad place, re-forging the axe to be symmetrical (it was left-hung), and fitting a 24" handle to it. It's coming along nice, so far. It is made of WI, with a carbon steel bit.. It will be a beast to throw, and probably be more of a wall queen or attention-getter. I also have been modifying violin cases to carry throwing axes.

I'll take more photos as I put stuff away, but here are a few:

My favorite throwing axe in a 1/10 violin case:

Axe target and new lane bed ... yes, it is on a trailer! I'll paint the 10/12/15 foot lines when the weather dries up.:

10" broad axe head, circa early 1800's, cut to remove bad area:

Cleaned up on the perimeter and a pre-fit for the handle. I'll only lightly clean the surface to keep the age-look. Maybe etch it in evap-o-rust to give a nice black look.:

Hidden Treasures...

Got the matting down and marked at the axe lane.

Took some more photos of the flowers outside the shop and deck. New Devil's trumpet blooms form every day. I shot some close-ups of the interior bloom.

The Night Blooming Cereus has 23 buds on it. They are growing bigger every day. Probably bloom late this coming week. I added a photo from the last blooming period a few weeks ago.

Last photo is four Fillet Mignon steaks vac-packed with fresh herbs from the garden and ready to put in the sous-vide. Friends at 4 for dinner on the deck.
