Whats going on Spyderco?

I think any company has some poor design choices in its portfolio of knives. Spyderco just puts out ALOT of models so they roll the dice more often and eventually individual knife designs will be released with flaws in design.

This is what I like about Spyderco, though. CRKT does the same thing, only without the same manufacturing quality, use of quality materials, or CQI process. You get lots of models and custom collaborations... and some of them prove popular, some don't. The ones that don't get shuffled off after a run or two.

The sheer variety of options Spyderco has put out lately means that some of them are bound to end up with design or manufacturing flaws or just not catch on in the market, but I'm glad that Spyderco takes the risks, because for every Tropen, there's a Kapara.

This does mean they can be hard to get, because they're not tooled to make each new model constantly, so the production runs of popular ones will often run out before they're scheduled for another run. C'est la vie.

Spyderco has always been one of my favorite companies. Have many of their knives, sharpmaker, etc. Lately it seems all the new and innovative knives they make are in such low supply they are gone the day they are released, have some huge production flaw, or both.

Exposed edge on the tropen, after being a year late almost. Its still a great blade, but thats a big oversight.

I wanted a smock, those are gone.

I wanted an Ikuchi. Those are gone and have also apparently been pricking people when closed for those who got one.

Should i even get excited for the native cheif? Will it be obtainable? Will it prick me?

I get it, spyderco doesnt owe me any knives, but these are production knives and not even sprint runs. Why not make one new knife that will be available when you say and in stock more than one day? I thought spyderco was about quality, innovation and consistency. Lately they have been disappointing the heck out of me.
Maybe ZT is more your style? :D

Me personally, I've held two of the best Spydercos I've ever held in my life at Blade and they were both this year's models. The Paysan was soooooo choice. I could gush, lol.

Really? I thought the Paysan was a tremendous disappointment at that price point.

I met Mr. Glesser later in The Pit, he's an absolute legend.

Ive wanted a Slysz Bowie for quite a while. Dang Spyderco company that made me not buy it when Knifecenter had it in stock!
Now the Slysz gets snapped up on the secondhand market in no time flat. Why didnt Spyderco have a time machine and why were they not able to predict this.
A previously owned knife sells for $500 or more. Even the secondhand market prices are clearly Spydercos fault. Why dont they stop this!
I blame Spyderco for making a quality knife and for making people really fancy it. Dang Spyderco.

Hey, to each their own.

The one I handled at blade functioned flawlessly. Ticked all the boxes for me, but, I can see the price being a bit off putting to some. I buy almost exclusively secondary so it's not quite as steep.

Well, that price for a production knife makes it pretty much a non-starter for me right out of the gate. Partner that with a weak detent (I held three of them at different tables and they were all weak) along with a complete after-thought of a clip and a table price of $525 and I was like "...what?" No, sir.

That should be a $350 knife TOPS. But, as you say, to each their own!

Endela - we didn’t even know we needed it
Funny because its true:D

Thats smooth. Make people want a relatively humble FRN handle knife even before it hit the market.
I have a ZDP DF, VG10 Delica, and a V-Toku2 Endura and I still want an Endela.

The Smock is definitely on my interest list, hopefully production will catch up with demand. I've watched some go on eBay for truly dirtbag markup prices.

I don't think the problem is on Spyderco's end. One thing I will say is that I'm not generally an early adopter on Spyderco products. I love their stuff and I admire them as a company more than any other knife manufacturer, but because of their CQI process and attitude I often find that their fifth or sixth run of a new knife just seems to be better than the first.

I just bought a Native Chief just to proof you wrong. Should be here Saturday.

(Just kidding, I wanted one anyway.)

And that's why there are flippers. Flippers need people who get the heck disappointed out of them when they can't get a knife. Without those people, flippers asphyxiate.

I think the Native Chief is going to be a hit of the newer blades. Love the lockback, shape and profile of the blade/handle!

Agreed, while it's a little too big for anything I'll ever use it for if you like big blades the Chief will satisfy.

Whatever happened to the Kapara? Are they not going to make it anymore?

Yes, still making it, just OOS everywhere until the next run.
