What's happening in the David Mary Custom shop?

Package arrived at the shop Wednesday, which was promptly opened and organized.

Scales:

Five 9" long blocks of each of these, to be cut in half for a pair of scales for most knife sizes:

And 1/8" sheets for Liners/Spacers (or outer layers with liners underneath!):

From left to right, Honey Locust, Red Heart, Zebrawood, African Mahogany, Padauk, Basswood, and Purple Heart.

I know that top pic makes it look like I used a customer's knife to open the package.... I did not. I used my Resilience. That knife was just the next one to be worked on a that time. Speaking of which, after putting the wood away, I finished these and their sheaths (except the first one will be getting a Sharp & Fiery Sharp & Fiery sheath):

Beautiful stuff, David!

All the 8670 Sylvan blanks I have left in the shop are spoken for, but I have recently put in a request with Jarod Todd to have some more plasma cut and heat treated from 80CRV2 carbon steel. Except these ones have longer blades. I'm still awaiting confirmation and word back from him on the run cost so I can't price them out just yet.

I did a wood run last Saturday, but no where near as that volume.... Wow! :D

I haven't made enough wood handled knives yet.
I love the synthetics for bad weather (and prefer them up here), but nothing is as beautiful as wooden handles (of so many types). Some blades just look wrong with anything but oiled wood. Just my .o2

David, I know you are meticulous and careful with dust, but for others who start sanding wood- be careful with some of them. I remember sanding a couple of knife handles of zebra-wood and tulip-wood and was stupidly not wearing a mask. Serious sore throat and skin irritation. There are some nice charts available for wood toxicity.

Stay safe!

Wood can be sneaky. Even just with dust on skin, some can have a sensitizing effect wherein you become sensitized not just to them but also other woods. It's good advice to look them up and play it safe.

Longer you say? how much?

Same stock thickness as the most recent run?

Hurrul Hurrul the Sylvan XL will have a 13" and slightly taller blade with a more pronounced thumb ramp. The first run will be from 3/16" stock, a little thinner than the .225", but the extra length and blade height will make it a harder hitter as it will be proportionally more front heavy than the original.
