What's so special about the Busses?

I have to ask this here - I went to the Busse forum once, and I couldn't understand a damn thing! :(

Doc

Don't worry, Doc.

I've been going there for a year and I still don't understand a thing.

It ... does ... not ... matter! ;)

[They're still nice to me.]

lol, your guess is as good as mine. :D

Just kind of made it up. :p

Cool! If you come over the Busse side of the tracks :D;):D;), we could really challenge Jerry Busse in giving you one of our goofy Hog names. Just think, you too could be in our elite club of acronym junky misfits, wielding a silly swinish name and your right to deanimate carparts and deforest campsites with a swing of INFI.:D

LMAO. :D

Sounds to good to be true.:cool:

eastr77: In my experience the larger models cut exceedingly well after some light edge work. They don't match up to a well honed hatchet. Much of what we are speaking of here is the ability of the user to wield the tool. A lighter knife can't smash hard wood with the same amount of impact as a heavy axe. The BM is a great product, but is a compromise of sorts.

MORIMOTOM, sorry but I have to ask you? Who is the lady you use as an avatar?

Doc

That is the incomparable Amy-O, yet another reason why Busse is the greatest. She's one of the sweetest young ladies on the planet, a consummate professional, and one of the most-loved folks on BladeForums.

*edit* Err. I M DUMB. I didn't see that Morimotom had already answered your question. But Amy-O is a sweetheart. The world needs more people like her. Just don't get on her "bad list".

You guys is funny. :D

Don, you're pretty funny yourself. :p A little chronological comedy for you...

Busses are chock full of hype (from forum members here) its a clanish type thing, that is to say a club of guys holding their very expensive knives out and saying lookee what I got. Like a vette or a colt python or anything else that screams I have money, look at me. Is there a god damn thing someone can do with a Busse they couldn't do with a Becker, absolutely....they can say they spent three to five times as much.

Don's direct response...

Spot on, spot on. :D

Don's claim to objectivity...

Primarily I am irritated at scammer and others like him who invade threads and shit on other people while thinking that because they do it with a smile that somehow absolves them of their rather childish behavior.

Don shitting on other people...

All of that having been said, I would like to try a Busse out, but the Internet Kool-Aid Slurpee Club is sickening.

Most of this is BS and bragging rights. I have no problem with the knives, I have not liked some of the things Jerry has done in the past but that's forgivable.

Another claim to objectivity...

But the potshots and BS...if it stopped, everyone would probably be better off.

Don taking a potshot...

I have two words for the hog avatar guy, he knows what they are. :D

Please, give us more September 11, 2001 emotional claptrap. :jerkit:

Don's total confusion over why this thread went downhill and off course from a discussion about the knives...

Tell us about WHAT knives? Seems to me like all of these Busse threads end up like this, why is that? You are all-seeing and all-knowing and everyone else, The Great Unwashed, don't know about knives?

Funny stuff indeed. :D :p

Don, I hope you like your Busse when you pick one up.

Ive been contemplating getting a busse, see what the hypes about and get a knife I can beat the hell out of, but I must say that all the obnoxious acronyms are a real put off. Why cant you people in the for sale forum at least spell out what it is instead of using these strings of gibberish. WTF is a BIBB?
Anyway, I'm fed up with shopping for a Busse. Ive never had such a hard time trying to spend money.

Compromise?? Hmmm... Yes, I guess that ya can't really slice as well with an axe like ya can with a good knife... :D

When I finished for the day, the FBM was still hair shaving sharp. No nicks dents or chips from the edge... All it needed was a little cleaning up, and I also oiled the grips for a bolder contrast... I'd rather take this knife out camping than an ax and a camp knife, if I had to choose between the 2 options. These BM's really can give an axe a some competition. I had fun using my FBM LE to chop on this large oak bough that had fallen last summer.

I believe that it stands for Bolo Inspired Battle Blade. Since some of these names & concepts are rather long, they tend to get trimmed down to a simple acronym... In this case, "BIBB". :)

They may be considered production knives, but they're produced in batches similar to customs. Thus, it takes patience to get what you want. It may involve waiting for a batch to hit the Company Store or waiting for the knife to come up on the Bladeforums Exchange. Busses are not great if you like immediate gratification.

WTB posts (in the Wanted to Buy forum) can help.

I asked this same question on the Busse forum (bad idea, by the way).

The response that hit home the best for me was something like, and I'm paraphrasing here:
"Busse's are like cars, liquor, and women. At the top end, the price rises rapidly for small gains in performance."

That says it all for me. I will not be such a fan-boy hater as to not admit that if all things were equal, I'd pick the INFI steel knife. I can not, however, say that I would pay three times as much to get it. The small gain in performance for me, does not justify the added cost.

The last time I went to the Blade Show was the sameyearthat Busse made the change from A-2 to INFI for all models. They had big display up with bar graphs showing how INFI compared to the nextclosestcompetitor in about adozen fields. (ie: edge retension, flexion before breaking, flexion before taking a permanent bend, etc.) The closest match was usually something around 8x. In other words Infi held a shaving edge 8x longer or bent 8x farther before you broke a tip off, etc.

That`s a heck of a difference in my opinion. At $300-400 a piece they`re pricey, but they`re guranteed for life to fix or replace `em free. I know a survival instructor at Ft. Benning who`s broken 3 ka-Bars and 2 Randalls in the field and had nothing to show for it. If you COULD break a Busse....you`d have a new Busse. And it costs the same or less than 3-4 other knives of similar size.

Does that warranty apply to all their knives including the smaller ones like the Game Warden?

Yes! ...Also, the warranty stays with the knife no matter how many owners it has had.:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup::thumbup: :D

So I got constantly check the company store and hope that I luck out? Do they announce a date when theyre restocking on the webpage or an emailing list or anything??

Also, the catalog in .doc format I downloaded has the steel heart ergo for around $330, is that current? I'd definitely buy one at that price, but I'm seeing used ones for $450+ and there's no way in hell I'm paying that kind of mark up.

I'm not in a big rush to own one, but trying to buy one is a huge hassle.

Why does everyone overlook the recently available (and probably future available at the BCS) Badger Attack TAC knife that sells for $227 in standard configuration?

Jerry himself posted that this knife proved to be extremely popular. I think he meant that they got a very high number of orders for this particular "all around" knife, so it struck a chord with a lot of people.

Keep an eye out for this one at the BCS

Not ALL Busse's are $300 to $1500

Jaxx: that job you did on the branch is very impressive indeed.

Not to be funny or anything but how was your hand at the end of it? Any blisters? I'm just curious.

I think its an awesome blade, the Battle Mistress. Unfortunately the reality that I can achieve the same results with a beautiful Gransfors Bruks axe or hatchet, at a quarter of the price, prevents me from making that purchase.

I had to be content with a Cold Steel Trail Master, the poor man's BM. :)

This was the first time I'd really put this FBM to use, and after about 10 minutes, I felt the beginnings of a blister at the base of my right index finger... The micarta handles were kind of rough, well, not really rough but sort of like a tire tread, with alternating ridges and valleys, so to speak, and one of these 'ridges' was the culprit... So I stopped and took some 600 grit sandpaper to the high points. After about 20 minutes, I had sanded them down enough to my satisfaction, and after this I went back to the task and have had no more problems since. Not even in the spot that I thought would blister.
I tried to find a pic or 2 that could show what I mean about the patterned 'tread' on the handle.
(My terminology here might be wrong)
If you go back to my other post with the pix, in the last image you can see that I didn't remove all that much, but what a difference it made!! :)

BTW, I like those Gransfors Bruks axes & hatchets, and want to pick up a few different sizes myself. :)

Yes, it does - it applies to everything Busse, even those tiny Game Wardens. And if you should, for some reason, pry with your little 3" Game Warden so hard it takes a permanent set, and then decided to hammer it back straight with a hammer or a mallet and broke the tip off in so doing, Jerry would replace it no questions asked and shout something like "no regrets" at you, too.
