What's that you're eating?

Galbi and salad (because there wasn't any steamed rice available mid-day) w/some Lagunitas IPA at a dive bar/restaurant located in the middle of nowhere in the "delta" off of Hwy 4 between Stockton and Discovery Bay.

It's owned by Korean grandmother named "Yong" who serves Korean dishes both on & off the menu. If you don't see what you want on the menu, ask and she can probably serve it. She has a couple very cute "happa" grandchildren that I've seen before. I've got a couple of happa GCs too. ;)

She also provided me w/some home made "go chu chung" sauce (used w/bi bim bap) on request. Went to get it from the frig in her residence on site. LOL! :)

Stopped here while doing a loop trying to find some 93 Octane gas for my Vette and BMW. 2 sites located on a "Find 93 Octane" gas map were a bust. Lots of heavy truck traffic on the route but still had a nice drive. :)

Traditional Vietnamese New Year dish. We call it Bánh chưng at my house.

Does it look like this?

Looks similar but much fancier than the Cantonese "doong" (sticky rice wrapped in banana leaves) which use to be available just during the New Year but is now available all year round in both sweet savory versions in most Chinatowns.

More or less. I'd say the Viet version is more like a log than a square or rectangle package. Same basic concept though.

More like this then. Pics show it both ways. My GF lives in SF near the Tenderloin where some Vietnamese delis are located. I'll ask her to look for it and buy some to try b4 the end of the Lunar New Year, if she can find some. Always looking for something "new" to eat. :)

If you've never had Banh Xeo (Happy Pancakes), I highly recommend it. It's a Vietnamese crepe filled with pork or pork belly, shrimp and vegetables. All topped with Nuoc Mam.

First, you take ‘dat left over NY strip ‘n slice it nice and thin. Then you git dem boiled, baby Yukon golds out an halve ‘em up. Lay those bits ‘n pieces out purdy on the big twelve incher after you grease it up good and proper. No, not that one. Soak it all wit a egg tsunami. Cover and flip one time when cooked thru.

Otherwise known as Chilean Sea Bass...no one would buy it if they used the real name.

Chilean Sea Bass? Really? Learn something everyday on BF. :)

It's in the same class of fish like the Monkfish that looks awful but tastes GREAT!

Love me some Ankimo -- Japanese style Monkfish liver -- the Foie Gras of the sea. Yum!!!

Not many Japanese restaurants serve it but just so happens that one near me does. Haven't been there for awhile and reminds me that I need to go there again soon. :)
