What's that you're eating?

Wish I could take credit...we went out to eat for my birthday. It's my favorite dish at a local place, and they sent us a $30 off birthday deal. This time they kinda skimped on the lobster, but has shrimp and scallops too.

Well they sure didn’t put a cake down in front of you,

So without any further ado,
Happy Belated Birthday jlauffer jlauffer

No they didn't...bastards! LOL! My wife's birthday is only a few days after mine, so we usually do a special dinner out for both of us, which will be tomorrow. We went to this same place for the first time last year for our anniversary, and it was great, and they gave us a little something extra for the special occasion. So we'll see if they do it again.

And thanks!

Tonight’s breakfast for supper started early this afternoon when I tried my first go at making strawberry preserves. My wife brought home 6lbs of fresh Louisisna strawberries, which is about 5lbs more than we can eat right away.

Ground pork seasoned with a family recipe for breakfast sausage, a can of biscuits, homemade cane syrup.

Damn I must say the preserves are phenomenal !

Just bought a 5lb box of shrimp chips (Asian chicharrones) from Amzn, which should last me the rest of my life.

Shrimp chips come in flat discs out of the box but puff up when fried. Just made a batch. :)

Wife and I's birthday are only a few days apart so we always go out to a joint bday dinner. Went to a Peruvian/Bolivian place tonight (we went there last year for our anniversary), and we both had steak. She got a ribeye off the regular menu, and I tried this special...chimichurri hanger steak with mashed potatoes that had Brussels sprouts, corn, and bacon mixed in. And asparagus for the wife to take home.

I don’t know what I was expecting when I read Asian shrimp chips but it certainly wasn’t that.
So what is that?
Dehydrated shrimp paste that puffs up like a pork rind, and multi colored. What’s going on?
Starch flavored with shrimp paste (and food coloring).

They're REALLY tasty (and very light. When they puff up from the frying, they're mostly air).

You sometimes see them served as a garnish or decoration on some dishes at Chinese restaurants but they're seldom served in a whole bowl to snack on as pictured above. Most of what I made will probably go stale before I eat it all.

I like them better than potato chips. They're just as greasy & starchy and go just as well with beer, but they are naturally "salty" and there's no need to add any more. I also find that I can't eat as many shrimp chips as I can potato chips.

While I could eat a whole big bag of potato chips in 1 sitting by myself, I find that I can only eat 4-6 shimp chips before I feel full and have had "enough." So, in this sense, shrimp chips are "healthier" for me to eat than potato chips. ;)
