i almost won one of those orange handles straight blades too but lost while i was asleep.

Not bad on the win for the 186, Schrade Walden/Schrade made several models very similar. Many of them have the bail attached, some of them were made just like yours without. Out of the ones I have. I've yet to get one without the bail. Good job!!

yours has the 186 on the same side as the "Schrade Walden" stamp. mine has the 186 on the reverse side, wonder what that indicates in terms of manufacturing dates? it is sooo neat that these differences exist makes it like an on going mystery.
are these supposed to be used with tar paper? or to i guess be more exact, what were their intended use?

I think the front stamps are newer than the back stamps. Not too many patterns had front stamps on Schrade Waldens. That is a nice quartet Rusty.

Yes, nice quartet Russell.

You must spend a lot of time hanging around under telephone poles. Or checking the tool buckets on the PP&L trucks while the lineman is up in the bucket lift. ;):p

Delmas, I've seen these same knives used by many trades, for tar paper & shingles, carpet & tile, orchardists & nurserymen, carpenters & electricians. A very handy cutter !

Nice ones Rusty!
That frame always seems to have good snap.Probably due to the big beefy spring!

Here are a couple new ones for me.

The first is a 8041, 1985 Schrade Heritage.
It came in box with papers

The second is an Ulster Barlow #12, however there is no number on the reverse tang.
It is very nice in spite of the fact that someone overcleaned it.
I am pretty sure this one did not come with a high polish blades.

Thanks for the comments guy's!! Always appreciated.

Roland, The first Three Hawbills are indeed 136 models, the serrated edge is a 163 model.
digging a little further (Into the tool buckets of the PP&L technicians) Fran seems to of been following me around!! LOL. I have found out thus so far. The 186 has been seen without bail, the 163 comes with and without bail and a serrated or Sheepfoot blade, the 136 comes with and without bail, with a Hawkbill blade or a Sheepfoot blade.

I agree also with thawk on the age of the knives being older, if the numbers are on the rear of the blades.

Dale, That barlow looks like a real dandy!! Nice find.

Looks like a Hallmark of sorts, and I'm not familiar with them on Schrades. I have some Hallmarks on Schrade IXL knives.

All good but yeah, extra nice score on the DU! It's an attractive knife. I saw that auction myself and was sorely tempted to bid but have promised my self to ease off for a bit. I'd buy them all... I'm glad it was you who snagged it!

Those Heritage Series do come across as quality: nice knives.

Any idea when that Barlow was made? I know nothing about dating Ulsters really. I don't see too many in that shape and just wondered. Nice!

Here is a pic of the three Ulster Barlow patterns, #10, #11 & the #12 from a 1960 catalog (it is on Larry's web site).

Notice that the handles are listed as Bonite, which was a synthetic material of some sort, perhaps even early Delrin.

My #12 Barlow is saw cut bone.
While I don't know for sure, I would guess it was made post-WWII in the late 1940s, or even in to the 1950s.

Larry, Eric, Fran, or anyone else have an educated guess as to when my #12 Ulster was made?

Thanks all,
Dale
