What's your Near Perfect Knife?

"this is the part where Wowbagger brings up his Urban Trapper"

Ha, ha, ha, yeah it is getting old isn't it ! ! ! !
Not to use it but to post it.
I just have to tell my self there are one or maybe two people in the entire knife world that have not been bored to death by my gushing about it.

I have been surprised in other chatrooms on other topics when I post a years old thing and people say they have never seen it. Looks like you will have to put me on "ignore". :( :)

Nah, I see so many other knives things even out, lol. I've only seen your Trapper in one other post(mod post IIRC) but for some reason I remember it really well.

I didn't foresee the M4 PM2 though

. . . combination of weird space alien handle color, unbelievably easy to sharpen with ages long edge retention, some dang indescribable feel while carving stuff that has to be accurately done, that fun compression lock and the effortless perpetual motion like swing in the pivot . . .

yeah . . . i'm in love

I'm really enjoyimg seeing and hearing about all every body elses knives; keep 'em coming !

Also how light it is. Will you let the M4 patina or are you going to keep it satin?
I'm trying to get mine to patina, I got a little bit on there.

BM mini grip with BM custom shop G10 handles and M4 blade is about as close to perfect that I've gotten so far. Small micarta Sebenza 21 is a close second.

The perfect knife? I have never seen one, as of yet.

Funny, as I grow older, I look for the perfect knife less and less. I do, however, look at "features" more and more. Not "bling" features, but, things that I know will meet my EDC needs. Drop point blade, FFG, OHO, non-metal scales, thumb stud placement, etc..

Right now, Benchmade's Bugout comes close. It meets most of my needs. I am just waiting until my 531 is lost before I buy.

A knife I've wanted for the last 25 years was the Victorinox Scientist in White Cellidor scales. Real ones tend to be pricey, well north of a C note so it's always been a want knife. I like the minimalist tool choices on it and the size is perfect for pocket carry.

Now the odds that I could get the scratch needed to pick one up on the secondary market were next to nil, especially bein' on a fixed income. Still I always look and I had mentioned it in another thread that I've always been on the search for a white Scientist and how it's a favorite/grail/wants knife on my long list when I get a message askin' for my address, a few days later I get a package from Yablanowitz containing a modded, I'm presuming a Yeoman turning it into the 2 layer fauxScientist.

Thanks Jack I still have that smile on my face and I keep grinnin'everytime I take it out to use it. I do a lot of lookin' at fleamarkets, auctions and yard sales for knives and antiques. The toolset on the Scientist is perfect for flea market person. The magnifyin' glass and screwdriver set all come in handy while examining vintage knives and antiques. Just wanted to put it out there that Jack put this together for me and not as a fake Scientist. Kinda like a disclaimer so anyone who ever sees this knife again know it's a fantasy SAK. Great job Jack and definitely my definition of the near perfect SAK. ;)

The GEC #66 Serpentine Jack is my close to perfect knife. Fits in the pocket like a charm and in hand as well

If I only could have one this would be... :)

Manix 2, I love everything other than the front choil. (I don't even mind the width...)

I just had a change of heart. as I was writing this I mentally replaced the Manix LL CF S90V with my new Shaman w/ Marble CF scales. I loves the way it feels in the hand and is a very useful bladeshape. I can't wait till it comes out with premium steel. I want the M390. Easy to sharpen and holds a keen edge for a long time.

Factoring all variables and considering what I’ve actually been able acquire, I’d have to say that for me it’s the Southard. All of my gripes are pretty minor. I’m even ok with the pocket clip. ;)

In the end, I like having variety though.

While there is no "perfect" knife, so many different tasks and specific uses from one to another, urban edc vs. camping or deer hunting vs. tuna fishing, for me, (out of just the ones I own), i would say for a Fixed blade, I would go with my bk5 magnum camp. It is "almost" the quintessential knife. Not "too" big like a machete, definitely not too small, not too thick or obtuse, it can chop if needed and still slice well enough with its flat grind, and it has a good pointy tip to make a good pig-sticker. Not 3v but 1095crovan is tough enough and sharpens well enough to a razors edge. It's a great all around knife.

For folders, a tough one. A ton of variables to consider, but (today) I'd say my Viper 10. While not necessarily my "favorite" persay, I do love it! It's a great size and weight, not too big or too small, not too thick or too thin, the action is smooth as butter, micarta scales are comfortable, fills the hand nicely, it's another I would say is just a great all-around knife.

That's just my 2 cents. Definitely interesting to read all the opinions and reasonings behind said opinions.

You know what two knives tickled me silly back in the day? The Benchmade/Chris Caracci AFCK. Back when the competition was slim, back when most companies hadn't gotten past the press fit to a friction tolerance stage and BM was experimenting with washers and an actual tolerance +or-. The Car accident designed blade moved like half a perfectly balanced balisong. No production knife out there was balanced like the AFCK, it was a ballet in practiced hands and a silent, deadly tool in even more experienced.

AFCK (Advanced Folding Combat Knife) 2nd one from the right.

If you've never held one it's hard to explain, the handle was a perfect size for a secure grip in any style. It feels natural left or right. The ti liner lock was secure and after 10 years of obsessive flicking it never wore, weakened or bent. It had the perfect balance of weight and size. The mass of the blade was like flywheel turnin' 'round, it just wanted to keep opening.

It was a slick blade too, no resistance once you initiated the opening flick. Chris put a lot of thought into this knife and the co design with BM, they had the resources and he had the talent. :) Keep in mind too that this was happening just as people were gettin' over the ugly knife with the hump and the hole in the blade. ;)

I have to confess to the BM 710. In fixed blade, the Fallkniven A1.

All things considered I would have to put the Sm. Sebenza 21 as the near perfect knife. The manufacturer is is pioneering, top notch & well respected... It’s sturdy, it’s classy, it’s not really small or big, the fit, finish, materials & IMO, design are almost second to none. I personally carry a Lg Inkosi or XM-18 or one of many Spydercos much more than my Sm Seb but no other knives fill all of the roles of the Sm Seb.

For me its the CRK Small Sebenza 21 CF Insingo. The Carbon fiber and the lanyard keep it interesting and make it a nice art piece, and (at least for me) the insingo blade shape is the most useful one out there. And of course, it has all the other sebenza perks. Great history, made in the USA, good blade steel/handle material, good warranty, and a slim profile.

Of course no one knife is perfect, but I'm not sure there's any other 1 knife that fits my daily activities and personal preferences better.

Right now it’s my Emerson Commander. Higher end knives have come and gone and still have a decent collection of folders. But day after day I find my self taking my Commander to work.

The balance, ergo handles, and grippy G-10 make it my perfect work knife.

I don't think any are perfect or close to it, but my Para2 is pretty good whether in S110V or M4 steel.

I like the Benchmade 730 Ares, and the latest 908 Stryker variant, and either of these with plain blade in M4 or S110V steel would be pretty good too. The 908 in M4 has been manufactured and is available, but at a high price. The closest 730 would be in M390 and they are hard to find and much more expensive.
