What's your survivla knife??

Mike,

A few years ago, I contacted Mike Stewart about lengthening the handle slabs on a North Star. This would make the blade just under 4" from tip to handle slabs for a Connecticut legal EDC blade. All my Barkies are made this way and Mike started calling them "New England Specials".

I find the closer edge to the handle improves carving ability as you have more handle to choke up on for fine work. Even my Wilderness Learning Center school knife has been New England Specialized!

Ka-Bar Impact spear point with D2 steel and micarta handles, and I attached a small pouch to the sheath to slip a DMT green sharpening slab into. I can cut a lot of material with this knife without needing to re-sharpen it, and that is important in a survival situation. I know a lot of folks on here complain about D2 chipping, but I've had no problems with mine. And when it does get dull, a few swipes on the DMT bring back a shaving edge.

Becker Necker, I always take this one along with a new toy. It seems the toys change frequently but the Necker remains my backup (and therefore will be on me when stuff happens).

two favorites for a big knife th HI M43 kukri. for a lite knife a camillus AF survival knife that i ground a finnish edge on( about 20 hrs work with a diamond hone ).

A nice light combo with oodles of utility... my Swamp Rat Camp Tramp and my Strider SNG.

I forged this one from 1084 and the handle and blade are all the same chunk of steel. The teeth actually cut and can be sharpened with the EDM stone. The pommel is 2011 aircraft aluminum and the guard is 6ALV4 titanium. The handle is a wrapped kevlar-epoxy composite. The pommel is hollow and holds about an OZ of magnesium thermite for firestarting.

The knife is butt ugly buit it's the exact one that I have wanted for a long time and finally made it.

The sharpening rod is a Boride EDM stone the screws into a magnesium holder just like an EZ-lap sharpener. The holder can also be used to scrape mag shavings off of for firestarting.

Thanks, the knife weighs 20 oz and the sharpening stone is 1.2 oz. The handle cavity holds three fire steels, hacksaw blade piece for a scraper, fish hooks, line and three waterproof/windproof matches. The pommel also has a compass built in.

Depending upon terrain, I'll sometimes substitute the hatchet for a machete.
