Okay... got it fixed up. :)

This one will take you through to the point of the blade being finish ground and ready to hand sharpen on stones.

I still don't quite understand what the disc does compared to the flat platen??

Flat platen on the 2x72 is 2" wide. Disc is at least 4.5" wide if using a 1deg and 9 if using a flat. It is much easier to maintain a very flat surface on a disc. Also the belt flexes a little on a flat platen, kind of like a wave building up from the top which can also cause problems. Many who do not have a disc, and even some who do, use a surface plate or other flat surface to true up their flats. Like Nick does when he is adjusting his main shoulders with a piece of precision ground bar stock.

Yep, what Chuck said. :)

Here's one just for kicks... ;) :)

Thanks for the sharpening video. Like you said many ways to skin a cat and since I know your knives come with a terrific edge I appreciate know what you do to achieve it.

That's a rowdy shirt, did Joe make you wear it? The Poodle is what caught my eye.... I know he loves those poodles...

Poodle?!? Dem's fight'n words...

It's a Newfoundland puppy--- (hence the: "Newf droolz rulez" ;))

Love your dogs Nick!! Your blades are just an added bonus. ;)

I'd love to see what the cross of one of your Newfy and one of my big black Labs would look like and behave like. :)

Hey buddy- Not to derail this thread--- but you might get a kick out of this. ;) :D (specifically from 0.28 to 1.05) ;)

Now that you posted this video... I knew that bit of history @ one point in my life. :) Our labs are great dogs...

(Sorry for the thread highjack...)

Now back to your Fabulous Fighter progress & very cool instructional vids! :)

LOL, All gravey son! They weren't poodles in the other Thread either, it was a Giant Schnauzer and a Maltese. Couldn't believe he didn't give me grief for misstating the names. I assume he knew I was being facetious as I was here.

Great vids. Thanks for taking the time to put them together. I know how time consuming it is.

Great work Nick and thanks for taking all the time to do the videos.

If you don't mind me asking I was hoping for some thoughts: when you were talking on the first final grinding video you talked about the geometry, making the blade even and thin and then feathering the edge down, we have discussed this before and I understand most of the things. However, for these bowies what was the goal thickness of the edge before you feathered? Is there really a difference between 0.010" and 0.020" thickness before feathering, all else being equal?

I find this concept interesting, you even pointed out in your sharpening video; they are thick at the ricasso and then thinly ground and sharpened and they cut like a razor. Which is awesome and you did a great job!

*shakes off the dust* ;)

Here's another video for the guys that are interested.... :)

In comparison, I build knives like a caveman with some low quality caveman tools.... Time to start making and acquiring better tools or I'll never see the results I want.

Mastiffs become big cats when they want attention. All the same...

Nice work on the video, bud. Your fixtures are really well thought out.

Nick just like in you blade smithing you have taken WIP threads to a new level with these videos

The quality is fantastic and you do us all a great service my friend

Plus you are a good dad :)

Fantastic project brother
