Wheeler Fighting Bowie Project :) ( UPDATED CUTTING & FORGING VIDEOS)

Hey guys- :)

So this is a bit of a can of worms, but it's already been opened a bit, so now I'm just tearing the top of the can right off. :foot: ;) Sorry Joe! :o

The original plan Joe and I outlined was "52100 blade, G10 handle. No exceptions. Keep it consistent. Keep it simple."

Easy right???

Doh!:foot:

When you're dealing with hand forged blades that are going to loyal friends/customers, it's hard to stay so rigid.

After a lot of emails and calls, there are already a handful of these knives set to be built with something other than black G10.

So if you are on the list for one of these and don't want G10, here's the dealy-O---

Wood can work, but it has to be a very heavy and dense wood, or I can't get the knife to balance properly. Something like Ironwood, Blackwood, stabilized Bog Oak, etc. I only have a couple blocks of wood in my shop that are big enough and heavy enough. So you would need to source a block you like... my number 1 recommendation would be to go to Mark Farley (Burlsource) and pick something out. It has to be an XL block!!! Something around 2.5" wide, 5.5" long, and 1" thick!!!

IF this is something you want to do, please holler at me at NickWheeler Js at hotmail dot com and we'll iron it out. And please do that before you buy a block of anything, so I can make sure it's something that will work.

If you want to stick with Joe's original idea here, then we will continue as planned.

Thanks fellas!!! :)

Here's a bump to keep this at the top, so any of you 12 fellas that need to, will see this.

Just for kicks here... ;)

My shop helpers are featured in many of my videos. They are part of the family and a fixture of my shop. Some folks have been curious how big they are. Bentley got stung and I took him to the vet yesterday. The paperwork from the vet officially puts him in the F'ing huge category. ;) :D

Bentley, the guy that puts out the food, and Oliver... :)

man, I love those dogs.

My brother has a Newfoundland and he is awesome. When someone knocks on the door you cant really see him and only hear him, someone will think twice before entering the home. Also I don't know if they all do this or not but his will actually lay down by the food bowl, lay his head in there, and eat while laying down.

What do I always tell you

People can have any handle material they want as long as its Black G10 or Micarta :)

Joe and Henry Ford... ;) :D

BTW- I also have G10 in other colors--- Olive Drab Green, Forest green, Ruby red, Coyote brown, and for the really adventurous (or possibly color blind ;)) Hunter orange, and Toxic green! And some natural canvas Micarta well. :)

Patrick- sounds just like my boys! LOL They would lick somebody to death before wanting to actually hurt them, but if a person doesn't know the breed and just sees the size and hears the deep chested bark... they definitely turn tail and go the other way! :D

I just went into town (trip to the hardware store) the other day and had them in the back of the truck. The two guys at the hardware store came outside with their eyes wide, and one asked, "Hey, um... did you know you have two bears in the back of your truck that bark like dogs?!?"

Here are pics of the other G10 I have (these were taken from the last JoeyP project :)).

Here's Olive Drab Green with a lightly polished finish-

Here's the very same ODG G10 with a satin finish-

And here's "natural" Canvas Micarta right after it's finished and before it starts to darken up (ultimately turns maroon, but I have no idea how long it takes for that to happen on such a large piece!)-

Honestly folks this knife was designed around certain handle weight criteria and if its a lighter material you will not be getting the most out of this piece so if you must have wood :) choose heavy dense wood

ODG G10 or Olive Drab for mine. I have another makers knife (small hunter) in the ODG and it looks good and has a neat feel in the hand. Some of us gotta be different. :)

I also like it to have some 'texture' left in the handle so it doesn't need to be polished.

Some time later it has darkened but not sure if you can compare lighting is probably different.
