where do we do the next challenge?

Exactly, Chris but fit and finish isn't everything either. Maybe plunge lines don't line up, gaps appear between scales, or scratches are left in the blade but somehow it still just feels right. Gene had a good example of that type of knife in the last challenge. It was ugly as home made sin(no offence, brother) but I couldn't stop looking at it.... it told the story of its creation. IMO, if a knife can put you in the proper frame of mind when using it... most little F&F quirks seem to melt away.

Rick

I feel better already :)

this is gonna be fun, and most of all will put the fire on me to finally finish a knife....

Because of the recent sheath discussion in the other thread I'm thininking that this may be a good place to bat around some sheath ideas for the challenge. There are alot of different ways to skin this cat, but the important thing is that it gets good and skinned. Any thoughts? Rather keep sheath ideas quiet until after the challenge?

I mentioned in the other thread that I saw one really weird horizontal carry neck knife/sheath a while back, and although it looked very cool (great craftsmanship) it ultimately lacked practicality. Going from poor memory, and wish I would have taken a pic, but as I recall the lanyard basically wrapped around the sheath and was kept in place by a post (or two) midway down the sheath. I don't remember how it was tied off at the end. I do recall one obnoxiously long lanyard. So was this guys idea completely wackey or is there some hidden value that I'm not catching?

I've often used shock cord through a lanyard hole and over the end of a sheath as a safety. I think it's a fine thing to do, and if you are riding (striker or horse, or bike) it's a REALLY good idea.

I prefer upright carry on neckers with a nice really deep pouch, but I'm not very tactical.

I am planning on doing something a little different on this challenge to allow for upright and inverted carry, with a leather sheath, securely and safely. But I don't really want to explain it until I know it works :D

I was bouncing around the idea of a sheath that could be upright or inverted as well. My main concern was for just in case inverted carry didn't work they could revert to upright. I am still learning the leather work side of things.

I have an idea that is similar to your cord thru lanyard scenario..

leather inverted sheath has a snap with a leather cord attached to knife with mated end.. there's a couple other ideas but I'd have to draw them out, especially since I'm at a loss for words at the moment, as I type this there are two people in the room asking me questions, I have problems walking and chewing gum let alone multi-tasking :D...

Guess I should have read your post in its entirety before I jumped the gun..... :)

This is very doable in my mind..

I love neck knives and carried one exclusively for a long time, never did hone in on a proper carry lanyard though, perhaps its time..

I like to be able to carry my neck kniife under one arm...i guess you could call it baldric style...while i am on the move. For this I typicaly run the lanyard through the holes on the kydex sheath to that the knife is handle up and canted at an angle to make it easy to cross draw. When i get to camp I usuially move it to a traditional neck carry. I find having it under my arm keeps it out of the way and easy to reach if its needed.

My personal favorite way to carry this size of knife.

Maybe one of these days we should do a sheath focused challenge, with the attention on multiple carry options. That would be something to see.

I think a sheath challenge for a production knife of some sort- something where everyone is working on the same thing- would be fantastic as a challenge.

Sheath only category and "sheath/survival system" category.

It needs to be something all the interested parties can get their hands on, like a condor nessmuk or bushlore or something

I like the Condor idea. Reasonably priced and readily available. Maybe limit modification to freshening up the edge.

While I have done mods to the condor, anything beyonde changing the edge geometry wouldn't be fair to the dedicated seathmakers.

Aaaaaand. Sierra is back up and running with her stuff. So I say we do that thing. I will NOT judge it due to wanting sierra to enter.

Pick a knife, someone jump on the judging, and put it together. I nominate cain or cpl punishment as I don't think they are koyotegirl regulars :D

In fact. I will start a thread for that. Should we run that one out of gear?

edit- anyone? opinion

Well unfortunately, that is just how it came out of heat treat. That funky etching pattern will be gone when I take the bevels down to sharp.

Looks lovely as usual Rick. Can't wait to baton that sucker through a thick chunk of oak.

Nice rick!! CAN THEY SEND IT TO ME AFTER THERE DONE????
