Who carries a Stockman

Knives7-28-12001.jpg

One of the most useful patterns, IMO. I have a drawer full, but this old beater UH is becoming my favorite.

I had one and absolutely loved it. The Stagalon is really comfortable and looks nice for fake stag, but the Uncle Henry shield is what really drew my eyes to it at the flea market. I like the California Clip and the fact that the sheepsfoot blade has a nail nick on the shield side. The steel is really good, 440C I believe, but the hardness is perfect. I traded it for an axe head with one of the members here. Now I have a medium Case in stainless, but the blades rub a bit and don't have the solid snap that the Uncle Henry had.

The Case

I carry a case medium in chesnut and cv, the 63032, fits my hand kike a glove and just improves with time I love it. However those old schrade's are really getting my knife envy flowing! :D

I use master clip blade for all purpose heavy cutting, spey for opening cans, little spear to keep razor sharp.

I have carried this Wards with all steel liners for about 8 years pretty exclusively ,and will probably continue so.I think it may have been a Winchester contract.

I've been known to carry a stockman on occasion.

I really do like those Bucks with the yellow delrin scales. What's the model of those three please, if you don't mind me asking?

I do prefer stockman's with the squared off bolsters..

I have four Stockman patterns. Of the ones I have this Boker gets the most use :)

I went from initially not being interested in the Stockman pattern to becoming a convert after I tried one. Now the variations on the stockman are my most commonly owned knives. Case 6318 and 63032 medium stockman patterns seem to end up in my pocket more days than anything else.

Here's a nice 1970 Case Medium Stockman that Gevonovich gifted me :)

This is another Case Medium Stockman, rhis time in stainless, which I won in KG's giveaway about a year ago. I actually used it this afternoon :)

Uncle Andi kindly sent me this Rough Rider in smooth tobacco bone last year :)

The smaller one is a 303, the larger a 301. IIRC Buck has discontinued the yellow models, but residual stock can still be found on dealer sites.

Tongueriver,
That Erickson is one of the most handsome folders I've laid eyes on in quite awhile. Knife envy is rare for me - but I got it bad! What are the specs on this knife? Closed length, steel, etc. How difficult is it to acquire a Ken Erickson folder?

From 3¼ inches to 4⅜ inches.

The wonderful, slender 3½" serpentine. I prefer my sheepfoot nick on the mark side.

A unique pattern, RR's 3⅜" Eureka stockman.

The medium Stockman is one of my favorite patterns you can usually find one in my pocket.

Below are my three favorites and the ones I carry the most.

036.jpg

1)A Faux Pearl Buck 303T with Bucks 420HC

2)A Northwoods medium Stockman with Burnt Stag scales with 1095 CV blades

3)Finally a Queen with Stag scales and D-2 blades.

Below are my impressions on each knife.

The Buck feels like the beefiest knife of all and I like the fact that it has three backsprings one for each blade yet it's really no wider than the other two Stockmans, I really like the heft of the Buck, it actually feels heavier than the other two, I'll have to put 'em all on a scale and post the specs for each knife.

I really like the hollow grind on the Buck and also the fact that the sheepsfoot is sandwiched between the other two blades makin' stronger and more centered which aids in it's use as a point cuttin' blade.

What I don't like are the phony MOP Scales, although overall F&F are excellent, blade sharpness Outta da box, on a scale of 1-10....I'd give it a 7.

The Northwoods, (the 2008 Traditional's Forum knife) was keeper from the day I laid my hands on it, even though they burnt the tips on the blades, (all three of 'em) while sharpenin'/polishin' the blades durin' production but the Stag scales just sucked me in, they were a supper match, with such a warm and comfy feelin', the flat ground blades outta box sharpness about a 6.

It just nestled in yer hand perfect, it makes ya compulsively wanna rub it, the Arrow Head shield fits perfect, again F&F were perfect, once I put a sharp edge on all the blades I was happy.

Negatives, the only complaints I had about this knife were the tip burnin' and the nail nick could've been deeper, nothin' I can't live with the spring strength and nick depth still balance well.

Lastly a Queen #26 with Stag scales also with flat ground blades in D-2, F&F were great this knife has half stops on the two smaller blades and quarter stops on the main Clip blade.

The Stag on this knife is really grippy which feels good when the knife is wet, F&F with this one also excellent the only problem I had was the shield popped outta the scales within the first week I had it but I used a clamp and some twenty four hour epoxy and it's held for the last 7 or 8 years.

Sharpness outta da box rated a 5 :( but once I dressed all the blades on each knife they were a 10 on all blades.

The Northwoods sharpened the easiest

The Buck was the next easiest and the Queen in D-2 was the hardest but I think it'll hold an edge the longest.

Anyway that's my story and I'm stickin' to it... ;)

I've recently gotten interested in stockmans. I've got some Schrade Old Timers and Uncle Henrys, some Buck 301 & 303s. My favorite lately is the Schrade 897 Uncle Henry.
