Who else EDCs a fixedblade?

When leaving the farm for going out into "the real world", 99% of the time I have a pair of Kabar 125x "shorties" at 3 and 6, with a BK11 in my LHP.

Sometimes, just because, I'll replace one or both of the shorties with BK tweeners or Kabar MK1s.

Even in "liberal" Austin, I have never been hassled about them. The only comment LEOs have made were along the line of "What are they?" or "Why 2?" or both questions. They get the answer of "If I loose one, I still have one." along with the story about my grandfather and the combine in 1965.

Now that we have pre-emption in Texas, I may put San Antonio and Corpus Christi back on my visitation list. SA's locking folder ban and CC's fixed blade ban had me avoiding those cities for the last several years.

If a city or business has a "policy" against me carrying a legal knife into their establishment, I simply vote with my wallet and don't spend any money there. And because I am the south end of a north bound mule, I write letters to them citing what I bought and where I did it and how much I spent elsewhere because of their policy.

And maybe because it's my family uses the Scott & White Hospital system, I have never been hassled by anyone at any of their facilities. Between my own appointments and my mother's, I am in 1 or more of their facilities at least 1x / month, usually more. (My mother had a blood vessel leak blood inside one of her eyes and she has been getting injections into it 1x / month for 2 years plus other eye exams.)

SA had a locking folder ban??? My parents live in Seguin and I have been into SA numerous times with my ZT's..we also have a little place in Rockport so I have been through CC edcing fixed blades a few times, I thought since we legalized auto's that I was good to go with pretty much anything. Crazy to hear you can get away with more in Austin than other places in TX, Austin is CA East...hate that place! Love my little Bravo Mini..sorry for the fuzzy pic.

That would be nice. I think they were a short run though. A df or delica would be nice but no longer using that steel I don't believe

Why don't you check out spyderco knives with blue super? That's definitely a carbon steel and comes in sizes that range from very small to fairly large. They're one handed opening, have locks, and have pocket clips.

BK14 right now, also have a Bradford Guardian3 that you can see in my avatar that I carry too.

Not possible?! Why not? If it's legal, who gives a damn what you carry on your person?
Bottom line is: if something is legal, it is YOUR decision to carry or not. If it is based on, and driven by, other people's perception of what you SHOULD carry, that's on you.
I say carry what you want (so long as it's legal) and let the general public get used to seeing it, and the fact that you aren't about to shank them at every turn.

I agree with that philosophy, but in reality it's a hassle to carry a FB here in CA. In the summer it's easier, but if you need to wear a jacket or something that may cover the knife it's just too easy the end up concealing it. I always wear my shirts out, so I'd either have to tuck in or hike the shirt up over the knife. I don't like that look, and when you walk in a store it's like "here I am, with my knife!". I just don't like drawing that kind of attention.

I think the state of mind of the person carrying a fixed-blade in public is a very important component of carrying it.

I carry my fixed-blade in public all the time, but when I do I don't give a single thought about how others might react to it, or if they will even notice it. I'm sure that some people notice it, but they very rarely say anything about it. And no one has ever said anything negative about it.

When people are self-conscious about anything, they will very likely expect negative reactions from others, and perhaps imagine such reactions even when they aren't really there.

I was grocery shopping the other day, and there was a guy in line in front of me at the register openly carrying a fixed-blade. No one said a word to him about it, at least not while I was around, and no one said a word to me about mine. It was as if our knives were invisible, or simply that no one cared about them. Two guys carrying fixed-blades in a store full of women and children, and near cash registers full of cash, and yet, no one freaked-out, no one pointed at us and yelled "OH MY GOD THEY HAVE KNIVES!!!", no alarms went off, we weren't surrounded by store employees or ordered to leave the premises, and the cops never showed up.

It's just possible that if the person carrying the knife doesn't make a big deal out of it, that no one else will either. That seems to be my experience anyways.

Of course, if a person is uncomfortable openly carrying a fixed-blade, or any other knife in public, then they shouldn't do anything that makes them uncomfortable. To each their own.

I posted earlier in this thread about openly carrying a fixed-blade in California, post #105.

I like to have a utility folder, and a dedicated SD blade. Something I am not afraid to "part with" if needed. These two have been my go to pair for awhile.007.jpg

I'm not in CA but I open carry a fixed blade pretty much everywhere I go. I've never had anyone say anything to me about it and I've never caught anyone looking freaked out about it. I don't dress like I'm trying to intimidate anyone and I don't look like a pushover. I'm sure that has something to do with it. Look intimidating and cops will come. Look like a pushover and people will try to push you over. Look like a normal person and people will think you're just a normal person with a knife on their belt. I carry my knives in some kind of tooled leather pouch sheath or in a plain kydex sheath. I'm sure if it was some stupid tactical sheath or in some kind of sheath emblazoned with skulls and crap all over it there'd be some heads turning.

Look and act like a normal, mature, civilized, and reasonable person who's comfortable with who they are and people will be comfortable with you regardless of what you're carrying, in my experience. That's coming from both sides, as a law enforcement officer and as a person who feels it's a person's right to carry whatever tools they want. Start going mall ninja or start acting like a thug then things change quickly.

After discovering the G-clip I am conceal carrying larger fixed blades, comfortable as it were! I've already expressed my opinion on open carry. When I open carry it is because I can and want to. When I conceal carry it is because I can and want to.

Well said sir. :D:thumbup:

That's a nice look. I cold blued one of my carbon Moras and it came out looking a lot like that, a bit darker though.

Bob

Thanks much, Bob! I did this one with horseradish. Probably won't use that technique again because of the funky odor left over - hehe!

Try wrapping the blade in TP and letting it soak in cold apple cider vinegar for a while.
