Who else has shifted from folders to fixed?

Where would safe be? Just asking...I'd take my family there...
Seattle? Home of the Serial Killer Factory? No, not right just being a smart @55...sorry...
But the Nwest...& Canada is not immune... Clifford O, and Robert P, they don't deserve to be fully named.
No disrespect, just thinking out loud why so many monsters from the North west US SouthWest Canadian provinces...
As far as carrying :
There's many reasons.. Up bringing, experience, no experience, it's not a lifestyle why I try keep some sort
Of "equalizer" with me... It's there to help me overcome the person(s) attacking me, or my family, or your family.
I always have two folders, fixed when I'm outside..

There is no 100% safety. But there are places where one doesn't feed the paranoia.

Seattle isn't perfectly safe. But I'm not a female prostitute, so my level of concern about serial killers is pretty low.

I've just spent too much time in the company of gun people. No one in the US is "safer" because they are wearing two guns, three knives and Royal Robins tactical pants. I like the idea of taking responsibility for oneself, but for some people it is their life and lifestyle. And if I was an armed robber, those people are so obvious I'd probably shoot them for my own safety. Just seems like people sometimes lose perspective on what life is supposed to be about.

My take on things, not telling anybody else what to do or how to live. I've been in danger more than most people ever are, and I just can't play that way anymore.

So anyway, I'm in the fixed blade camp right now. I carried a folder for most of my life, but started carrying a small fixed about a year and a half or so ago and have no plans to go back anytime soon. For the reasons mentioned already-convenience, faster, easier with gloves on, leaves my pocket free, and a more comfortable grip. There are probably a few others I can't think of right now. Nothing against folders, carried a Sebenza for over a decade and a half and still do occasionally. But for me, I prefer the fixed right now.

I think I put these pics in "Who EDC's a Fixed Blade" thread but I'll put them here, too.

At work I carry a folder mostly sooner or later ill throw something on the belt to fix that. Recently moved to more fixed blades off work still carry folders but its now more of a 50/50 rotation. I carry more edc type though no monsters lol probably 8 oal is the biggest with 7-7 1/2 oal my sweet spot, keeps a full four finger grip and some decent workable blade length for me.

There's some very good folders out there.
I have many, & carry a couple everyday.
But the best folder is still a broken knife.
So, folders are handy, but cannot be as
strong as a similar steel fixed blade.
It's rarely my safety I'm worried about...
More like my family & friends, the girl I didn't know, who I prevented from being kidnapped
outside a bar...those are who I worry about. I already know what I'll do...

^ I would beg to differ, RX! Many people in the United States are "safer", thankfully, because of a certain breed of law abiding citizens, the type who care enough to protect the passive, feeble minded, anti gun citizens. Case in point.v

^Chalk one up for the good guys; one less POS criminal, liviing on planet Earth! :D

As for this topic, & switching over from carrying a folder, to a fixed blade? I can't not carry a folder...BUT, when I was working this past summer up in the high country of Idaho, I enjoyed the best of both worlds. :)

Not really feeling the need to carry my fixed blade now that I'm back in San Diego, & can CC my Sig P238.

BTW- I was wondering if anyone here on the forum, has seen hatchet/axe carrying Stabman around lately? :D

Nice, CM! I absolutely love that MT Custom Marfione Socom that you bought on the bay! I've looked at that other one over there...a little over my budget right now.

Yeah, it was pricey but they rarely come up for sale. I pretty much had to.

Several years ago I got a job working a shipping dock. A knife was a necessary piece of equipment as there was a lot of cutting to be done all day long (rope, twine, pallet wrap, tape, packing straps, etc, etc).

I started carrying just folders at work. Other guys carried fixed-blades. After seeing the advantages of fixed-blades I switched, first an Entrek Cobra, then the knife pictured below (Wilson Tactical model 25). And not only did my fixed-blades work well as cutting tools, but they also worked well as prybars for things like prying open packing crates (the Wilson worked better for prying than the Entrek due to its size).

Carrying a fixed-blade all day long at work I just got used to having it one me, so much so that I felt odd without it, so I started carrying it away from work. And I've been carrying a fixed-blade ever since for about a decade now.

There have been several occasions over the years where my fixed-blade came in handy for tasks that I would never use my folders for. Just recently my neighbor needed to cut a heavy piece of rope. He tried sawing it with his pocket knife with great difficulty and without success. I took the rope, pulled out my fixed-blade, placed the rope on a piece of wood, placed the edge of my fixed-blade on the rope, and hit the back of my blade with a piece of 2x4. The edge cut clean through the rope with one whack, and I completed the entire task in the same amount of time that it took my neighbor to pull out his knife and open it.

Why do people carry fixed-blades? Well, why do people carry locking folders? How many people actually NEED a lock on their folders? I don't always NEED a fixed-blade, but I like the idea of having a very strong knife on me. In the same way that many people just like the peace of mind they get from having a lock on their folder, I get peace of mind from knowing that I have a knife (fixed-blade) that is stronger than I might actually need.

It's legal to openly carry any size or style of fixed-blade in my state, and in my county. I already have a girlfriend so I don't have to worry about scaring away the ladies. All the people I care about in this world fully accept the fact that I carry a fixed-blade. And I own my own construction business so I can carry any knife I want at work.

And throughout a decade of openly carrying a fixed-blade in urban San Diego, and despite the dozens of cops who have seen me carrying it, not one of them has ever said a negative word about it. Not even when I'm out riding one of my big black motorcycles with the loud pipes, and wearing my ragged 20 year old leather jacket.

And lastly, in regards to the "carry a gun" mentality, not every state allows people to carry firearms, even if they have no criminal record. Carrying a firearm is not an option for everyone.

All I have to say is "that's ragged"? Looks almost new to me, lol.

I was posing to show the knife, not the jacket ;).

I went down once, slid down the street on my left side with the bike on top of my leg. The outer surface of the left sleeve got shredded from the cuff to the shoulder. And that's just one "misadventure" the jacket and I have had together.

You'd have to see the jacket in person in order to truly appreciate it's "character".

I did, and I am very happy for switching. I used to always break my folders no matter how well they were manufactured. Now I can easily stick with a cheaper fixed blade like the SOG Seal Pup and not worry about breaking it.

What's the point in carrying a fixed and a folder that are essentially the exact same knife? That's like extra weight for no reason.
Well lets see, pry bar is nice on the fixed blade, comes in handy often daily, sheath is PALS mountable so it can go on my bag or my thigh as opposed to just the belt. One's serrated one's not! Most of all I like em together that's Y...

I'd add like 3 serrations to the bottom of the fixed blade and call it a day. Then you can carry another different knife!
