Who still carries a Case Knife?

a. Make more of the pen knife
b. Tone down their use of stainless 🤮
c. Stop over-polishing the blades
d. Learn to sharpen
e. Up their quality control
f. Pin their shields

Hey, this could be a whole thread of its own!
I like their stainless. Patina is ugly.
Polished Shiny blades are nice.
My Case have come sharp, except one with a small wire edge. Easy fix.
Their QC is good enuf for me.
Pinned shields are over rated. Haven’t lost a shield yet. Can’t tell if it’s pinned or not w/o a flashlight.

You shouldn’t buy Case if you find them so deficient…or do you get them to grouse?

They're not necessarily overrated. It does however add an extra step & added cost. I'm honestly fine with either. For most normal use the unpinned shields hold up fine with little issue. I have knives with both pinned and unpinned shields but I've personally had two detach & had to epoxy them back in place. It's not common but it does happen from time to time. Nothings perfect & there's always pros & cons to both. As the old saying goes "Variety is the spice of life" 😉

To each his own. Agree to disagree.

I buy Case knives for the same reason others do: They appeal to me.

That said, there's a great big eastern elephant in the room that demonstrates a few times a month what benefits come from a little bit more attention to detail - for not that much more money. I guess I'd rather pay a little more and get a higher level of fit and finish - or at least have the option to.

With Case, it's pretty common for people to buy three or four examples of a given pattern, intending to keep the best of the lot and return the others. Don't shoot the messenger, it wasn't my idea.

The other option is to go straight from "gambling" or bulk buying Case's more affordable offerings in hopes of getting a good one, straight to quite-a-bit-less affordable options a la Bose and Ruple.

I just wish they'd offer a line of higher tier knives, with steel that might require a bit more interaction from the user, and with a little more attention paid to fit and finish. I'd be willing to pay a premium for that service and I think some other folks would too.

The shield fell out of my S35VN Jigged Buffalo Horn Case BackPocket. I epoxied it back in myself, better than new, as it wasn't set flush at the factory. As an American who remembers quality American manufacturing, that kind of thing doesn't make me super proud. Not a deal killer, but if they'd pinned it I'd feel like they cared enough to go the extra mile. I'm not the only one has experienced the issue, if you spend any time in the Totin' thread, you'll see a number of Case, and others, knives that are missing shields. Pinning might not make the knife any more functional, but it sure is nice when something is well-crafted even if it doesn't have to be.

I guess sharpness is a relative perception, unless someone's gonna bust out some lab equipment. When I was 10, I used to think I could get my SAK really sharp - turns out, I didn't even know what sharp was. By 12, I would've called my 10 year old self's knife dull. Compared to some of the knives in my possession, not a single one of my Case knives have ever come even close to sharp, GEC's either for that matter, but, like I said, that all has to do with a person's exposure to very sharp knives. I have a couple moderns that are truly scary sharp. Never received a Case like that.

I'll probably keep purchasing Case knives here and there for as long as they stay in business. They've outlasted most of their contemporaries, I'll certainly give them that. After all, "grousing" is a tried and true pasttime here on the leading edge of knife discussion. I guess I'm in good company. 🤷

No issues with this nifty second cut red stag 18!

“Grousing” just becomes tiresome after a while. Case’s pros and cons have been dissected and examined under a microscope over and over again. Everyone knows all of this. There is nothing new to say. Either you like them and still want to carry them or you don’t. It is a simple personal preference. Complaining here will not change anything.

That is a cool little knife ZHoovie ZHoovie !

Great looking Sodbuster Will Power Will Power , the Chestnut Bone CV Series is hard to beat. I would love to have that loaf of bread as well!

Apologies.

As one of the main threads pertaining to Case knives, on one of the main discussion forums regarding traditional knives, I thought this was the correct place to discuss some of Case's recent shortcomings.

Not the first time I've been wrong.

I am not suggesting you are wrong birdsbeaks birdsbeaks . It is our passion for Case knives that makes us want them to be as good as they can be. I have personally taken several opportunities to let Case know my feelings directly. My point is that all of the “if only’s,” and “I just wishes,” in this thread are repetitive, unproductive, and end up sounding like whinging. It is more uplifting to see lots of photographs and read interesting accounts about the knives and what people are doing with them.

And on that note, here is the most uplifting knife I own, a genuine first cut red stag 47 from the XX era.

Thanks! To be honest I'm just borrowing it this weekend. It actually belongs to my dad & all the worn down stag is his doing 🤣
I'm blessed to have a good relationship with my old man. We often share/trade/borrow fun stuff like knives & firearms 😉

That stockman has some nice color tones btw 👍

Quite a stunning example!

I've sent Case a number of emails. Sometimes the frustration spills over. 🤷

Understandable, can't let it get to you too much 😉
Most times, it doesn't bother me. I don't even think about it. I guess my recent spillage has to do with the fact that the gray bone Barlow I picked up is a literal rattletrap, the blades have so much side-to-side play it's silly.

I really wanted a nice one. I could send it back, but I don't like that game - one of the main reasons I quit purchasing Kel-Tec and Taurus firearms.

Eventually, since it is free of gaps at the spring/liner junction, and because I do like the covers (though they are significantly mismatched), I'll most likely squeeze it in a vice, repeen the pivot pin, and then polish everything back to flush.

If you are so dissatisfied don’t buy them anymore. This thread was started to celebrate Case knives.

Apologies, sir. I was simply sharing my opinion, as are you. I plan to continue purchasing Case knives, and will occasionally share my opinion of them. Hopefully, it won't spoil any of your future days! That's certainly not my intention. Have a good one!

We all feel the same pain. I have 60+ case knives (will post as soon as I remember how too lol). Case is a company I hate to love or love to hate depending on the day. I can easily complain about them all day long then 5 minutes later order another case knife, just how it goes. Nothing wrong with sharing ur options as long as it's in a respectful way which you did. 👍

I'm still carrying the same 75. I guess the only thing that can displace it will be another 75 or perhaps a 92 Jack.
