Who The Heck Are Ya?

Asheville, NC. It would be a long haul; too bad, I have always been interested in demascus and never really given it a try.

So my suggestion to all of the new folks coming in and asking us questions and participating in knifemaking discussions to put your real names in your signatures, if you don't want to have your handles changed. This at least gives us a solid connection - one in which we all will benefit.

Also, please fill in your location. Its easier for us to recommend an upcomming show, or say: "HEY! I live pretty close to you - swing by the shop" - type of stuff.

Peace, God Bless, and let's get to know ya! :D

Sounds good to me. My first post now so i haven't made a sig yet... but just you wait :P

As an intro I'm a pure newbie at knifemaking signed up on this forum 'cause a mate on another forum thought y'all might like to see how my first ever forged knife is coming along :P

Then he start take my car away. Now that hurt. HEHEHE!!! :D :D

Hello folks
My name is Jeff Trochelman and am originally from N.J. I've lived in Denver , Co. since 79. I got my first knife from my dad at about ten and have carried one daily for the past 48 yrs. About two months ago I decided to apply for a FFL and to finally start the process of learning the art of knife making. I just looked at Mr Grays, " Make your own " Damn ! Lots of stuff to learn. There is a fellow here that teaches knife making @ $ 200.00 per day. It seems like a reasonable place to start but a tad expensive.
ANY KNIFE MAKERS AROUND CO. THAT WOULDN'T MIND HAVING ME WATCH FOR A TAD WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. I am going to become a knife maker! The question is whether I jump in with both feet now, or go a little at a time.
YOU ALL TAKE CARE

Hey there
I guess since I just registered, that makes me the newest newbie here. My name is Mike Richardson and I am currently living in Palestine, TX. I've always loved knives, fires, and working with my hands, so I figure that it was always in the works for me to get into making knives. I've got a background in electronics and industrial controls, and currently work in a steel mill. I have an abundance of resources available to me and plan to make as much of my own equipment as possible. I thank everyone in advance for any guidance that you might provide to me.

Hi, I’m Bob Katilus, I have been grinding knives for about 8 months. I built a gas forge, and though currently doing stock removal, I am dieing to get into forging. Any recommendations will be much appreciated. BTW, I’m a good friend of Derkins: Matt Bailey.

Quick question... Indian George, why are your new posts dated in 1999? I am confused; please help the dummy (me) out? You seem to be on of the "big dawgs" in the knife community, so I do not mean any disrespect.

The 1999 is I.G.'s join date. ;)
He's been here, there, and everywhere for a while.
Post date and time are at the upper left of the posts...
Welcome aboard.
Howie

After I took a step back and looked my last comment, I realized it was a somehwhat embarrassing question. Thanks for the update, howie....keep me in check!!!!

Hi Bob,

Howie beat me to it. You're looking at his join date.
Ig's been around a long time and helped a LOT of people out with his knowlege.
Welcome to the forums!

I just realised two things. Me and Kit are the only guys here from the first month of BFC to post in this thread (so far) and I haven't given any info about me. I've been here since the beginning so that makes me ceritfiable. I'm just now working on my first knife (stock removal)...it's frustrating but I'm having a blast.
I'm a chef and I live and work in Fortuna CA.
I'll be at Blade "05 and I hope to meet some of you there. :D

Hey, what are you trying to say that I am like horse$hit all over the place???? HEHEHE!!! My Ex-wifes alawys told me that. :D :D

My name is Terry W Stults. I am a High School Tech Ed teacher in Wisconsin. I have been making knives off and on for a lot of years. I do both forgeing and stock removal work. My shop is 1/2 of our garage and during a good Wisconsin winter it can take 3-4 hours to heat up to use, so much of my work takes place during the warmer times. During the winter I have been known to put a knife together with a high quality blade I have purchased. When I do this I am trying a new handle material or technique, as an example my last one was with an octagonal bone with iron mounts. My area of interest is the time period 1650-1900, both the blades and the metalurgy, iron/steel making, and trade in cutlery in general. My handle "CW DOC" comes from that time, my wife and I do a lot of re-enacting and I do either a Surgeon from the French and Indian War or the American Civil War. I very much like the history part and have been able to study a number of excavated artifacts, et al. I have used some type of knife all my life both in civilian life and in many years with the Army( 2nd RANGER BN). They truely are the most basic and useful of tools.

Thank you for the welcome IG. By the way, if I could get out your way is it really true that the Relish will guide me??

Hi folks. I’m Joe Zaloga I live just outside Philidelphiain in Bucks County PA. I am new to knife making but I have made some cutting tools in the past the most memorable was a home made spoke shaver fashioned out of Lingrum Vita an exotic hard wood and a piece of O1 precision ground shim stock I got out of work. I fashions the blade with a hacksaw and an under powered 6” black & Decker bench grinder After about 2 mints into the project I realized a better grinder was a must. So out I went and got a 3600 rpm 1hp Delta bench model. I hardened the blade with a mapp torch and drew it to straw in an old toaster oven. I advocate using the best equipment you can afford.
