Who The Heck Are Ya?

George:
Thanks for the quick reply.
I poked around your web site those are some realley nice Damascus
Knives you made

Howdy y'all. I'm Daniel Denton, calling in from Webb City, Missouri. It's a town adjacent to Joplin, in the Southwestern corner of the state. I'm about halfway through college now.

I've been a knife enthusiast all my life, but I never started to seriously work on knives until last summer. When school started in August, I stopped doing knifework since I lived on campus. Now that I have my own place, I am again working on knives.

This site has been a great help to me. My last couple of knives have been the best that I've ever made, for both looks and functionality. My girlfriend is proud of my latest efforts, too.

Welcome; Post some pic's of your work Dan. :)

I will as soon as I get the film developed. They're from L6 carbon steel. I made a lot of mistakes on them, but I learned a great deal about knifemaking as well.

My name is Mike Bouknight (Bawk' nite). I live in Lexington, SC and just started making knives a few months ago. I read an article in the doctors office about Jason Knight and was immediately intrigued. My wife actually bought me The Complete Bladesmith by Jim Hrisoulas for Christmas. After reading it three or four times I have forged around six or seven knives. None of which I think are up to the standards I see everyone else producing. Hopefully that will change in due time. I have been searching archives and reading everything I can on this site and must say that I am impressed by how helpful everyone is with new knifemakers. Thanks to everyone who has helped me so far whether they knew it or not.

Well, I've got to actually get back to drawing and woodcarving before I take on a new hobby, but I've been interested in at least making one knife, I'm reading 50 dollar Knife Shop and Ed Fowlers books, any books you could recommend?

Hi Guys,

My Name is Tim and I'm from Nova Scotia, Canada.. Eh. I've always had an interest in knives and a fasination of how you guys make them. I use Keeper as my nick as I'm a Federal Correctional Officer (Keeper of the Keys). I will be retiring in about 3 to 5 years and decided to explore knife making as a hobby. Been reading a lot about this profession/hobby and it's dammed intimidating! I will try to limit the amount of Stupid Questions :footinmou promise.

Tim

Hi My handle is ssunfish cause sunfish was already taken, It is a reference to a big wide "pocket"knife that I like. Ayway my real name is Joe Olson and I am not that famous Joe Olson that makes Mosaic damascus. I have made three attemps at slipjoints and a copuple at liner locks. I haveb't given up on them yet. I want to make a half length butterfly knife and to start forging. I love the story of the guy on one of the first pages of this thread that goes on about how he was making and collecting machines all these years and now he is making a 2x72 grinder so he could produce soemthing to send off to a heat treater and then maybe be able to say he made a knife...thats rich!
If anyone reads this that lives an hour or so from Twin Falls Idaho, please write me : ssunfish@yahoo.com I love to go to knifemaking shops even the ones like mine that are a drill press and a belt sander sitting under tarps in the back yard..hey don't laugh you could be living in New York City where you would really be hard pressed to get into this great and expensive pasttime. No, but I would be more then willing to share time talking about knives and trade off ideas and tips withanyone at any stage in the game. I have good skills at hand rubbing blades and I am struggling with the grinding. My quality is still a murky future hope at this stage.

Hi Tim

I'd tell most people to run before the addiction sets in. As a peace officer, I'll just welcome you. It fits in philosophically and even physically compliments what we do.

I know you face minimum support from your employer and maximum challenges from your 'clients'.

I salute you sir!

To Keeper and Rob!

Just wondering...do you find it as relieving as I do to beat a piece of steel into whatever shape you want. As I am a deputy sheriff where I live I find it really helps get the frustrations out after a 36 hour weekend. Anyway...good luck to you two and be careful out there.

Mike

:D Kind of like playing pool. It isn't about power - It's about finesse.

.... and yes, it is nice to be able to try just about anything that comes to mind to shape that chunk of steel! Hmmmm... good point Mike. Where else in life do we get to make our own rules.

My name is Rick Haney,I live in Chattanooga,Tn.I've been a professional artist for 20 years.Learning from forumites on here is a joy.Bladeforums is the place I come to,more so than the other forums.Keep up the good work! Rick. :D

hey all, I'm Ben Geffers or just Benner. I live in Minnesota, and yes the skeeters are bigger here or at least there's more of them. :) I built a forge last fall and have been trying to teach myself to make knives. I've been a quiet lurker here for the last couple of months. these forums are a great source of info for me, and I hope to someday make knives worth posting here.

these forums have gotten me even more hopelessly addicted to knives and hot steel. :D

thanks a bunch!
God bless

I live in Leland, Michigan, south of the Mackinaw bridge on Lake Michigan shores. Some of you may have heard of the SleepingBear Dunes...just to my south. I like choosing handles..like Manitou which are Islands off the coast of Leland. These names originate from our Indian brothers, the Chippawa, and Ottawa tribes. I like my heritage and my handles, and in most cases if you refer to me by my handle..I am honored..Thanx.
Leland is for the most part, still a backwoods town...many of us locals refer to each other by nicknames. I will be glad to know you by whatever name you wish to go by.
I work in Fire&Rescue, and have been an artist, and skilled craftsman all my life..as was my Father. Knife making is a new skill for me, and I'm excited with it. I hunt and fish at every oppertunity, or scout in off season. Thanx.

My medium is wood and stone. I'm now just learning metals...although...I'm very lucky to have an Engineer Sister who owns a Tool and Die shop nearby. I will benefit from a shop with heat treat, lathes, mills, lappers, presses, lasers, tig and mig...and lots of stuff way above my pay grade. I can cut, weld, file, grind..you know..the usual stuff a guy would know...but I have every thing to learn about knife making. I've worked noble metals in jewlery work...so I imagine I'll style myself toward Yellowhorse. I have a great artistic imigination...thats a good start right?
